Emory went with me a couple of weeks ago to pick out some yarn from my local yarn store (I love how he supports me),and he thought the Cascade Longwood Sport would make a great hat for him! He loves to work out and his equipment is outside in a barn so wearing a hat to keep warm is essential in the winter months which is how Work or Play Beanie came to be! The yarn is on the thinner side, so I wasn’t sure but after looking at the label which said 100% merino wool I thought it would still be warm. Plus, he doesn’t like to wear a real bulky hat when he works out anyway. It would also be great for someone who rides a motorcycle, 4 wheeler, etc because it would be thin enough that it wouldn’t interfere with the fit of the helmet.
Don’t forget to Favorite or Queue in Ravelry
The Work or Play Beanie uses the basic sc, hdc and dc stitches which is great for the beginner. The only “difference” is since the yarn is thin, you’ll have more increase stitches than what you are used too! I love the great stitch definition of this yarn too. Each individual stitch looks perfectly identical to each other without flaw. I hope you’ll enjoy the pattern!
Note: Please remember what yarn I used! If you don’t use the same or something similar with achieving the right gauge too, you’ll be complaining about how the hat turned out too big! 🙂

Came across this pattern today on Pinterest. I was reading thru the pattern but it doesn’t say what size it makes. Can you tell me the circumference of this hat? Wanting to make one from hubby and son. Thanks!
Kathy Lashley says
Hi Debbie,
The hat using the yarn in the pattern would be around 22″. Hope this helps.

I made this hat for my sons-in-law for Christmas and they loved them. Now I am working on the Beanie hats for our American troops, I am using a camouflage yarn.
Thank you for the pattern this is quick and easy.

Hi! I was making this hat for my husband and it is nothing but a ruffle! My stitches are the same count but I’m only able to use a 4.25 hook. Could this be the issue? This is the only lightweight men’s beanie I could find and I’m so frustrated, I’m can’t get it to work! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Nicole says
I’m also using Mandala yarn by Lion brand . It’s a 3 lightweight.
Kathy Lashley says
Hi Nicole,
The Cascade Longwood Sport yarn is a superwash merino which is most likely to give a different look than the acrylic yarn and could be what is causing the ruffle along with the different hook size. The Cascade yarn is very “spongey” and allows for the tighter stitching. I’ve not used the Mandala yarn, so I can’t say for sure if that is the reason. Make
Sure you get the same gauge as I did too. That could help you.

Thank you! I’ll try again.

I’m using cascade 220 sport, and when I finished R10, it was only 5″ across, using the 4mm hook. Any idea if this sport yarn is the same thickness of what you used? A bigger hook leaves too much space and looks bad. Tips?
Kathy Lashley says
You can continue to crochet increase rounds until your flat circle reaches you’re desired measurement then continue with the rest of the instructions. I hope this helps you Delaine! Have a great day!
Cazzy (Carol Vile) says
I knew there had to be a hat in this thickness somewhere, thank you, going to make it for hubby.
Kathy Lashley says
I hope he loves it!
Natasha says
Do you have any advice for making this pattern with a medium yarn? I really love this hat, but want to use a thicker yarn. Thank you.
April says
I just made this with LionBrand Medium 4 weight, at the end of round 9, it measured 6.5 inches, so I skipped round 10 , and finished the rest of the rounds with 90 stitches, it came out perfect.
Kathy Lashley says
Yay! I love to hear stories like this one! Good for you!
Dee says
I stopped at row 7 using 4 weight Love yarn and didn’t finish all the rows at the end. It was a perfect fit for my husband. It was a try it on to see. He actually likes it very well.
Kathy Lashley says
Yay! I’m so glad he did! Score for you!

Hiya from Scotland where I now live (former AL’bamian down Dothan way:)! I found your blog through AllFreeCrochet and have just signed up for the newsletter. My husband is going to love this hat, and I’m thinking I’ll make one for my son and grandson still in AL. Thank-you for the way you write patterns (soooo easy to follow!) and congrats on the Flamie!

The pattern doesn’t have the band, does it?
Kathy Lashley says
The sc stitches at the end form the band.
