Amber’s way of connecting with her family, who are also crafters, is through crocheting.
Who Taught You to Crochet?
My mom taught me chaining and single crochet, which is all she does, when I was twelve years old. I made a bunch of wonky coasters that I think my mom still has, put away somewhere.
How Long Have You Been Crocheting?
Since I was twelve and I’m now twenty-eight so sixteen years.
But for about ten to twelve of those sixteen years, I wasn’t serious about it. I would just crochet when the mood struck, which was rarely, and would usually frog my creations, which were still wonky coasters.
Around November 2013, a friend showed me a bunch of really cute crocheted dolls, saying “I know you crochet but can you do this?” and it made me want to get serious with my crochet.
So I dug out my copy of “Reader’s Digest Complete Guide to Needlework” and practiced the basics.
I started making a little elf for Christmas. A co-worker saw it and asked if she could buy it from me when I finished it.

This is one of the many dice bags I’ve made for friends. I’ve made a tradition of sewing up dice bags for friends who come over to my house to play Magic: The Gathering.
Why is Crochet More than Just a Hobby to You?
Crochet is a way for me to connect to my family because many of the women in my family do some sort of crafting as a hobby: my mom crochets and sews, one aunt knits, two aunts sew, and my maternal grandma sewed before she passed away. I grew up watching all of them making things and had the urge to do it, too, which was why I got my mom to teach me to sew and crochet.
I love creating things from scratch and seeing the look of wonder on people’s faces when I tell them that I made the thing that they’re admiring.
