Christmas Present CAL 2016 Project #1

Yay! We are kicking off our 2016 Christmas Present Crochet-Along projects with the Tiara Scarf! It’s a fun an easily adjustable scarf! If you want it longer to twist and wrap back around again…..no problem! In the ELK Studio Crocheter’s Facebook group you find all the “ELKies” there to help answer any questions that may come up. We have everyone from the beginner to the expert so there’s always someone in there that has “been there done that”!

Supplies

Brown Sheep Company , Shepard’s Shades, 100 grams/131 yards, #5 Bulky weight, 100% wool, SS281/Eggplant/65 yards, SS2283/Boysenberry/90 yards, SS2285/Purple Coneflower/105 yards (DISCLAIMER: If you are allergic to wool, you can use any #5 Bulky weight yarn you choose as a substitute)
J Hook/6.0 mm
Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends.

Gauge: Is not important for this project.

Finished Measurement: 21″ x 5″

Abbreviations:
bpdc – back post double crochet
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
fpdc – front post double crochet
rem – remaining
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch

Special Stitches: If you need help with the 3-dc cluster stitch, click HERE for a tutorial!
Beg 3 dc cluster st (Beg Cluster) – (Yo, insert hook into next st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops) 2 times, yo, pull through all 3 loops.
3 dc cluster st (Cluster) – (Yo, insert hook into next st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops) 3 times, yo, pull through all 4 loops.

Notes:
Ch 1 is not considered the first st unless otherwise stated.

For a longer project, chain count is multiples of 2

Pattern Instructions:

Round 1: Using Eggplant, ch 150, join by sl st to first st to form ring, ch 1, sc in first ch, sc in each ch around, join by sl st to first st. (150 sc)

Round 2: Join Boysenberry, ch 1, *fpdc around post of first st, bpdc around post of next st, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. (75 fpdc sts, 75 bpdc sts)

Round 3: Join Eggplant, ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next st and each rem st around, join by sl st to first st. (150 sc)

Round 4: Join Cornflower, ch 1, sc in first st, ch 1, *skip next st, sc in next st, ch 1, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st, (75 sc, 75 ch-1 sps)

Round 5: Sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, Beg cluster (See Special Stitches) in same ch-1 sp, *ch 1, skip next st, cluster (See Special Stitches) in next ch-1 sp, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. (75 cluster, 75 ch-1 sps)

Round 6: Sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *ch 1, skip next st, sc in next ch-1 sp, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. (75 sc, 75 ch-1 sps)

Sweet Pink Spring Scarf!

Introducing you to the Sweet Pink Spring Scarf! When it starts getting warmer around here in Alabama…I get really excited. I can start designing with my cotton yarn again! In the winter months, most projects really have a functional purpose of keeping us warm along with the look and style as the 2nd priority don’t you think? When the warmer weather is trying to peak through my crochet thoughts are more of designing stylish pieces that can add a fashion sense to what you are wearing. While this accessory is definitely a scarf….it’s purpose was to wear as a fashion statement. Sometimes we just want to look cute and well put together and what better way than to wear this piece?

Cascade Ultra Pima Cotton is definitely one of my favorite cotton yarns! It has a wonderful sheen and gives incredible stitch definition! You’ll especially love this project because it only takes one skein of yarn!! Plus, at the time of this blog post….Craftsy has the yarn on SALE for $7.12/skein!

1. Cascade Ultra Pima Cotton, 100 g/220 yards, Color: Primrose #3712, 1 skein
2. Hook – G/4.0mm
3. Tapestry Needle for weaving in the ends

Abbreviations:

ch – chain
dc – double crochet

Gauge: Not important for this project

Finished Size: 50″ x 5 1/2″

Pattern Notes:

Ch 1 at beginning of pattern does not count as first st unless otherwise stated.
Ch 3 at beginning of pattern counts as double crochet unless otherwise stated.

Yarn Discovery #7 ELK Studio Style!

I’m very excited to bring Yarn Discovery #7 to you this week! I received this yarn when I attended TNNA last month and oh….what fun it was to watch it work up into this beautiful and versatile scarf! It’s “extra” long to give it a few more styling possibilities as I’ll show you below!

When I met Barb Brown from The Ancient Arts Yarn it was as if we had known each other forever. I find that quite often when speaking to a stranger that also has a passion for the crafts of crocheting and knitting. Barb has been knitting since she was 5 and has countless publications such as vogue Knitting, Knit Simple and many more! She was very excited about the Ancient Arts Yarns and especially two specific collections of their yarn called the Woof Collection and the Meow Collection. I wrapped the “scarf” around the waist twice and just tucked in the ends.

I wanted this blog post to be as informative as it could be, so I asked my ELK Studio Crocheter’s Group some of the questions they would love to know about a yarn they had never used. Let me start with the specifications of the yarn first:

100% Superwash Merino DK Weight
205 meters / 225 yards per 100 gram / 3.5 oz skein
Gauge: 21 – 24 sts / 4 inches (10 cm) 4.0 – 4.5 mm
Care Instructions: Handwash and lay flat to dry.

Now let’s talk about some of the other things you really want to know.

Can you tell me about the texture of the yarn?

The texture is soft and the yarn is incredibly lightweight

How far will one skein take you in a project?

Because I designed a “skinny” scarf with a shell type of stitch, this yarn went incredibly far in this project with the finished measurements of 80″ x 4″

What do you think is the best type of projects for the yarn?

Wow! Of course you can see the yarn works up beautifully designed in a scarf, but it would also be wonderful with any type of hat or garment!

What did you like best about the yarn?

The “motivation” behind the yarn was moving to my heart, and I would definitely purchase the yarn for future projects because of their cause! I really loved the look of this yarn and the with the name of this yarn being “Basset Hound”, I thought they nailed it perfectly with the colors. Once the project started taking its own personality, it really kept my attention with the various pattern moving along differently from row to row.

Pattern Instructions

Supplies:

Ancient Arts Yarn, 100% Superwash Merino DK Weight 225 yards/100 gram/3.5 oz skein, Colorway: Basset Hound I used the entire skein of yarn for this project. 225/yds.
Hook – E/3.50
Tapestry Needle for weaving in the ends

Gauge: Isn’t important for this project.

Finished Size: 80″ x 4″

Notes:

If you decided to make your project larger or smaller, just make sure you chain in multiples of 7 sts + 4.
Ch 3 at the beginning of a row counts as the first dc, unless otherwise stated.
For this project the shell stitches are given 3 different ways. I will type out each one specifically in the pattern but know that at the end where I am giving the total stitch count, I will just specify the number of shells (and they are the same for the entire pattern).

rep- repeat
sc – single crochet

Row 3: Ch 3, dc in next st, *(2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-1 sp, skip next (dc, ch-1 sp, dc), dc in next 2 sts, rep from * across, ending with last dc in top of ch 3, turn. (8 dc, 3 shells)

Row 4: Ch 3, dc in next st, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp, skip next 2 sts, dc in next 2 sts, rep from * across, ending with last dc in top of ch 3, turn. (8 dc, 3 shells)

Repeat Rows 2-4 until you have reached your desired length.

Finishing Row: Ch 3, dc in next st, *ch 3, skip next 3 sts, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 3, skip next 3 sts, dc in next 2 sts, rep from * across, ending with last dc in top of ch 3. Fasten off. Weave in the ends.
