3.How did you learn to crochet?

I taught myself how to crochet while I was pregnant with my 4th child.  I wanted to make cuter hats than I could make on a loom for the newborns in South America and orphans in Moldova.

4.How long have you been crocheting?

I have crocheted almost exactly 2 years.

5 What is your favorite thing to crochet?

I love hats, baby sets (hats and leg warmers) and boot cuffs (stuff that works up quickly).

6.Is crocheting a hobby or business for you?

I recently opened a shop, but I mostly do it just for fun. 🙂

7.Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

In 5 years I hope to NOT be buying diapers any more. Hehe! I’d love to see myself being more adventurous in my crocheting endeavors. I’ve never made a blanket, sweater or designed something on my own.

8.Tell me something personal about yourself.

I am a mom of 5 who loves coconut ice cream, reading, big boots, summer days at the beach and I HATE blue toothpaste! I mean like if I ever meet the person that decided blue toothpaste was a good idea I will kick them in the shins. 🙂

“Hi!  My name is Rachel Martinez.  My dad taught me to crochet when I was about twelve years old. I crocheted a lot of chains and didn’t really make anything else. I would sit down once in a while and make something very simple then my life took an unexpected turn. I had a daughter graduating from high school, and I found out that I was about to add a new baby to the family. Boy was I surprised. That’s when I picked up the hook and got serious about my crochet because I had baby stuff to make. YouTube was awesome for teaching me more about crochet than I could remember. Now, I’m having a blast with my 13 month old son and crocheting helps to pay bills and feed my new yarn addiction.”

Saturday Night Share by Making it thru MondayIntroducing today’s “Saturday Night Share” with our featured guest, The Cotton Road.  Melissa Linton is the owner and took the time out of her busy schedule to allow ELK Studio and you (the readers) to get to know her a little better.

1.   Name

Melissa but most call me Mel

2. Name of business (Facebook, website, Etsy, etc.)

The Cotton Road, I have  an Etsy store, Facebook page, Instagram, Twitter, website and blog all by that name.

3.How did you learn to crochet?

My aunt taught me to crochet when I was 12 years old. She make us hats, scarves even Barbie clothes out of thread. I would sit and watch her and one day asked if she could show me and I was hooked (pun intended)

4.  How long have you been crocheting?

I crocheted from about 12 to 17 took a little break and really got into cross stitching. I picked crochet back up in my early 20’s, but really in the last two years its exploded into a business.

5.  What is your favorite thing to crochet?

I have phases really. Right now its vintage inspired blankets and baskets! But I’ve gone through my hat and bootie phases too. I prefer to crochet for babies, so blankets and hats are my favorite.

6.  Is crocheting a hobby or business for you?

Both. I love to crochet its my stress reliever, and I get to profit a little from it.

7.  Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

I would love to be crocheting full-time but I don’t write patterns never had the patience to do that, and I don’t think that I can just crochet and make a living. I think that the people who are successful write patterns too. So I’ll probably be doing the same as I am now. I would like to set more though at craft shows and maybe enter some crochet contests.

8.  Tell me something personal about yourself.

I am married to an amazingly supportive husband, I have a rambunctious 8 year old, a crazy 2-year-old blue heeler puppy, and I’m a vegetarian. 🙂
