In this week’s Crochet Stories, we’ll learn why Tara enjoys crocheting and how she learned.

 

Who Taught You to Crochet?
I taught myself. I found an old flyer in some papers as a kid and thought maybe I could make my parents a Christmas gift. We had lots of wool in the house as my father was a master weaver and I found a random needle. Not knowing what I was doing I made scarfs. Let’s say they were less than perfect, but as parents do, they liked them anyway.

 

How Long Have You Been Crocheting?
30+ years

 

 

Why is Crochet More than Just a Hobby to You?
Crochet is my quiet calming place and has helped me through many depressing times. It is also my happy place as I get great joy from creating and giving projects away, though there is not much need for hats and scarves when an extremely cold day is 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

Who Taught You to Crochet?
My Grandma and mom taught me how to embroider pillowcases and then taught me how to crochet the bottom around them. I was 8 yrs old now, I am a disabled 70 yr old.
Crocheting has given me stillness and peacefulness in life.

 

How Long Have You Been Crocheting?
I’ve been crocheting for about 62-63 years.

Why is Crochet More than Just a Hobby to You?
It gives me the escape from the busyness of life when needed, and put enjoyment in people’s lives while making a little yarn money.

After receiving a prayer shawl, Mary rediscovered her love for crochet and got hooked again.

 

 

Who Taught You to Crochet?
I first learned to crochet when I was still in grade school. My mom and grandmother both tried to teach me, but they were right handed and I was a lefty. Finally, it was my mother’s youngest sister, my Aunt Charlotte who taught me to crochet left handed by sitting facing me.

 

How Long Have You Been Crocheting?
Although I learned to crochet in grade school, I didn’t do much with a hook until much later. In 2009, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and received a prayer shawl from my church. That shawl went with me to each chemo treatment and I wore it at home to stay warm. I was so touched by the gift, I joined our church’s Shawl Ministry and retaught myself crochet using on-line tutorials – – this time as a righty even though my left hand is dominant.

 

 

Why is Crochet More than Just a Hobby to You?
Hardly a day goes by when I do not have a hook in hand [if I don’t my husband thinks I’m not feeling well – HaHa]. I still crochet shawls and lap robes for our church’s Shawl Ministry and love giving handmade crochet items as gifts. Most importantly, a crochet hook and a skein of yarn will take me out of myself and helps greatly with coping with persistent depression. Making something beautiful always makes me feel better.
