When illness struck her, Terri shares her Crochet Story and how crochet helped her cope.
Who Taught You to Crochet?
My grandmother taught me how to crochet when I was very young. Every Sunday we would go visit her and she would teach me the basics. When I was older my parents opened up a craft store in Foster RI, called the Town Trader and a small yarn store for my grandmother in Providence RI and I worked at both of them.
How Long Have You Been Crocheting?
I’ve been crocheting since I was 13 years old, that’s all I’m saying! But I did take a break from it (about 25 years) and that was to make jewelry which I sold on Etsy and did very well. But I started getting bored with that and the market for handmade jewelry was so saturated that about 8 years ago I picked up crocheting again ( I can see you all doing the age math) but only a scarf for myself and close friends.
Why is Crochet More than Just a Hobby to You?
About 3 years ago I was diagnosed with kidney cancer, then literally 5 months later with breast cancer. Thankfully both were caught at a very early stage but at the time hearing the word cancer twice within 5 months I was devastated needless to say. I needed something to take my mind off everything so I put all my efforts into crocheting. I would sit curled up in the corner of my couch and just crochet for hours. I’ve made blankets for my home and my family, hat’s and scarfs and I’ve even sold a few! To me crocheting is so relaxing and rewarding and rids you of anxiety. I truly thank my grandmother for showing me the basics all those years ago!
