Through determination and desire to learn, Katie shares her Crochet Story on how and why she learned to crochet.
Who Taught You to Crochet?
I have been knitting since 2007. Everyone knew this. But not everyone cared to learn that I ONLY knew knitting. I would get a lot of crochet patterns sent to me to make and I didn’t know how to tell people that I didn’t know how. That, combined with a strong desire to learn (I’d tried before and never caught on), led me to ask for tips in a group I was in for knitters and crocheters. Someone offered to send me an extra set of hooks they had. After they arrived, I turned to YouTube. Most of my early stuff was made with the help of Bella Coco. Her tutorials were easiest to follow and I started with a granny square and went from there.
How Long Have You Been Crocheting?
In late 2014, I began to seriously consider learning. I made a Facebook post in a group for crafters asking if it was hard to learn crochet after only knowing how to knit or if was easier than learning to knit after. Someone in the comments said they had extra hooks they could send me. We messaged back and forth. Due the weather they weren’t able to send it until a month later, in late January 2015. I tried for a bit to get the hang of it but it wasn’t until March of that year that I really caught on.
Why is Crochet More than Just a Hobby to You?
I have anxiety, depression, and ADHD and crocheting can help keep me calm and focused. I also enjoy making things for others, as it makes me happy to make others happy. Additionally, I don’t currently have a job so crocheting gives me something productive to do during the day. I’ve met so many amazing people from this and I’ve no doubt I’ll meet a lot more.
