Once a year for the last 3 years, I have had the honor and pleasure of designing a square for the annual Moogly CAL. It was lots of fun using the Red Heart with Love with all the color choices they offer. If you haven’t started the CAL yet, it’s never to let to check out all the squares and get started today. By the end of the year, you’ll have one gorgeous afghan.

Red Heart with Love, #4 Worsted Weight Yarn, 370 yds/141 grams, Colorway: Daffodil, Blue Hawaii, and Hot Pink
J Hook/6.0mm
Tapestry Needle

Notes:

Ch-3 at beginning of round counts as first dc.
Ch-1 at beginning of round does not count as a st.
Join next color in the joining sl st of each round, drop previous color, yarn over with new color, pull through two loops on hook. Fasten off previous color.
Keep RS facing throughout.
Do not work into ch-sps unless instructed to do so.

Gauge: 15 dc and 10 dc/sc rows = 4″

Abbreviations:

Ch – chain
Dc – double crochet
Fpdc – front post double crochet
Fptr – front post treble crochet
Rem – remaining
RS – right side
Sl st – slip stitch
Sp(s) – spaces

Round 1: With color A, ch 4, join by sl st to first ch to make a ring, ch 3 (counts as first dc now and throughout), 11 dc into ring, join by sl st to top of ch-3. (12 dc)

Round 2: With color B, ch 3, dc in next 2 sts, ch 5, [dc in next 3 sts, ch 5] 3 times, join by sl st to top of ch-3. (12 dc, 4 ch-5 sps)

Round 3: With color C, ch 1 (does not count as a st now and throughout), *[fpdc around post of next dc in round below] 3 times, (2 dc, ch 5, 2 dc) in next ch-5 sp, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first fpdc. (16 dc, 12 fpdc, 4 ch-5 sps)

Round 4: With color A, ch 1, sc in first st, *sc in next st and each st to next ch-5 sp, 5 sc in ch-5 sp, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first sc. (48 sc)

Round 5: With color B, ch 1, *[fptr around next post st directly below] 3 times, ch 1, skip 1 sc, dc in next 3 sts, ch 5, skip 1 sc, dc in next 3 sts, ch 1, skip 1 sc, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first fptr. (24 dc, 12 fptr, 4 ch-5 sps, 8 ch-1 sps)

Round 6: With color A, ch 1, sc in first st, *sc in each st until next ch-5 sp, 5 sc in ch-5 sp, repeat from * to last 3 sts, sc in last 3 sts, join by sl st to first sc. (56 sc)

Round 7: With color C, ch 1, *[fptr around next post st directly below] 3 times, ch 1, dc in next 5 sts, 5 dc in next st for corner, dc in next 5 sts, ch 1, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first fptr. (60 dc, 12 fptr, 8 ch-1 sps)

Round 8: With color A, ch 1, sc in first st, *sc in next st and each st to next corner st (3^rd of 5-dc group), 3 sc in corner st, repeat from * around to first side, sc in next st and each rem st to first st, join by sl st to first sc. (80 sc)

Round 9: With color B, ch 1, *[fptr around next post st directly below] 3 times, ch 1, dc in next 8 sts, 5 dc in next corner st, dc in next 8 sts, ch 1, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first fptr. (84 dc, 12 fptr, 8 ch-1 sps)

Round 10: With color A, ch 1, *sc in next 3 sts, sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in each st to corner st (3^rd of 5-dc group), 3 sc in corner st, sc in each st to ch-1 sp, sc in ch-1 sp, repeat from * around to first st, join by sl st to first sc. (112 sc)

Round 11: With color C, ch 1, *[fptr around next post st directly below] 3 times, ch 1, skip next sc, dc in next 11 sts, 5 dc in next st for corner, dc in next 11 sts, ch 1, skip next sc, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first fptr. (108 dc, 12 fptr, 8 ch-1 sps)

Round 12: With color A, repeat Round 10. (136 sc)

Round 13: With color B, ch 1, *[fptr around next post st directly below] 3 times, ch 1, skip next sc, dc in next 14 sts, 5 dc in next st for corner, dc in next 14 sts, ch 1, skip next sc, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first fptr. (132 dc, 12 fptr, 8 ch-1 sps)

Round 14: With color A, repeat Round 10. (160)

Round 15: Continuing with A, ch 1, sc in first st, *sc in next and each st to corner st, (2^nd of 3-sc group) 3 sc in corner st, rep from * around to first side, sc in next and each rem st to first st, join by sl st to first sc. Fasten off. Weave in the ends.

I know…I know….it’s out of my “box” to design something like the Southern Summertime Square right? It was such an honor when Tamara (Moogly) asked me if I wanted to join the 2016 CAL and design a square, so how could I turn down the opportunity? Plus, it ended up being really a lot more fun than I had anticipated. I think with this square, the color possibilities are endless as you can see with the colors I chose. I loved using the vibrant colors of the Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice too. What do you think?

The square has just enough “openness” while still providing a sound structure to make it stand the test of time. I think this square coupled with all the other squares in the Moogly CAL fits in perfectly!

Supplies:

Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, #4, 170 yards/100 g, in White, Lime, and Aqua. Approximately 85-100 yards total.
Hook – I/5.5 mm
Tapestry Needle for weaving in the ends

Gauge: 14 dc sts and 6 rows = 4”

Finished Size: 12” x 12”

Pattern Notes:

Ch 3 at beginning of round counts as double crochet unless otherwise stated.
(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) The first dc in the sequence is a ch 3 or you may prefer to use the standing double crochet stitch.
(2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) The first sc in the sequence is a (ch 1, sc) or you may prefer to use the standing single crochet stitch.
Square is made in joined rounds with the right side always facing.

Round 3: Using Color C, join with sl st in any ch-5 sp, *(2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) (See Pattern Notes) in same sp, dc in next 5 sts, repeat from * around, join by sl st to top of beg ch-3. Fasten off. Weave in the ends. (36 dc, 4 corner ch-3 sps)

Round 4: Using Color A, join with sl st in any ch-3 sp, *(2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in same sp, dc in next 9 sts, repeat from * around, join by sl st to top of beg ch-3. Fasten off. Weave in the ends. (52 dc, 4 corner ch-3 sps)

Round 5: Using Color B, join with sl st in any ch-3 sp, *(2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in same sp, dc in next 2 sts, skip next st, V-st in next st, (skip next 2 sts, V-st in next st) 2 times, skip next st, dc in next 2 sts, repeat from * around, join by sl st to top of beg ch-3. Round 8: Using Color B, join with sl st in any ch-1 sp, *(2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in same sp, dc in next 2 sts, skip next st, V-st in next st, (skip next 2 sts, V-st in next st) 6 times, skip next st, dc in next 2 sts, repeat from * around, join by sl st to top of beg ch-3. Fasten off. Weave in the ends. (28 V-sts, 32 dc, 4 corner ch-3 sps)

Round 9: Using Color C, join with sl st in any ch-3 sp, *(2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in same sp, dc in next st, skip next st, 3 dc in next st, (3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 7 times, skip next st, 3 dc in next st, skip next st, dc in next st, repeat from * around, join by sl st to top of beg ch-3. Fasten off. Weave in the ends. (132 dc, 4 corner ch-3 sps)

Round 10: Using Color A, join with sl st in any ch-3 sp, *(2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc) in same sp, sc in next 33 sts, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first sc. Fasten off. Weave in the ends. (148 sc, 4 corner ch-1 sps)
