2018 Christmas Present CAL Project #3

It’s been a little crazy around ELK Studio lately.  So, I hope you’ll be excited to see Project #3 of the Christmas Present CAL.  Kodey’s asymmetrical shawl is a really fun, quick and easy crochet design that is perfect to give to someone you love.

Have you used the Red Heart Chic Sheep yarn by Marly Bird?  It’s an amazing yarn that is super squishy, soft and warm.  The stitch definition with this yarn is incredible.  I can assure you that you’ll love it once you try it.

Supplies:

    1.  Red Heart Chic Sheep Yarn by Marly Bird, #4 Worsted Weight, 100% Merino, 186 yds/100 grams, Colorway:  Fairy Tail (1 skein), Lace (2 skeins), Platinum (2 skeins), Sterling (3 skeins)
    2. I Hook/5.5.0mm
    3. Tapestry Needle

Abbreviations:

ch – chain
dc – double crochet
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip st

Gauge: 6 V-sts and 8 rows = 4″

Finished Measurements: 59″ x 31″

Special Stitches:  

Beginning V-stitch (Beg V-st) – (ch 4, dc)

V-stitch (V-st) – (dc, ch 1, dc)

Notes:

  • Ch 3 is considered the first dc in the row.
  • Ch 1 is not considered the first st in the row.

Here are the color changes:

Rows 1-7:  Sterling

Row 8:  Platinum

Row 9:  Lace

Row 10:  Fairy Tail

Row 11:  Lace

Row 12:  Platinum

Repeat again starting with Row 1 and follow the color changes listed above throughout the pattern ending the last repeat on Row 7.

Pattern Instructions

Row 1:  Ch 6, dc in 5th ch from the hook, dc in last ch, turn. (1 V-st, 1 dc)

Row 2:  Ch 3 (See Pattern Notes), V-st (See Special Stitches) in next ch-1 sp, V-st in top of ch 3, turn. (2 v-sts, 1 dc)

Row 3:  Beg V-st (See Special Stitches) in first st, V-st in next ch-1 sp (2 times), dc in top of ch 3, turn. (3 V-sts, 1 dc)

Row 4:  Ch 3, V-st  in each ch-1 sp across, V-st in top of ch 3, turn. (4 V-sts, 1 dc)

Row 5:  Beg V-st in first st, V-st in each ch-1 sp across, dc in top of ch 3, turn. (5 V-sts, 1 dc)

Repeat Rows 4 and 5 until you have reached Row 79 or either your desired width.  Each row will increase by one V-st.  Fasten off.  Weave in the ends.

Edging:

With RS facing, ch 1, sc in first st, sc in each st and ch-1 sp across, 3 sc in corner st, sc evenly down the side, 3 sc in first st, sc evenly up the side, join by sl st to first st.  Fasten off.  Weave in the ends.

2018 Christmas Present CAL Project #2 Part Two

Here we are to finish the edging of our beautiful Soft Pebble Shawl in the 2nd project of the 2018 Christmas Present CAL.  I think you’ll see that it’s a pretty edging but still simple enough not to take away from the beauty of the body of the shawl.

This design combined with the yarn really makes for an incredible accessory to a Christmas party or an elegant evening dinner party.  The sparkle really helps to set off the design and add exactly enough “fun” to turn the heads of everyone.

Supply List:

  1. Shawl in a Cake by Lion Brand, # 4 weight yarn, 481 yards/150 grams, 61% cotton, 34% acrylic, 5% other, colorway:  Namaste (2 cakes)
  2. G Hook/4.0mm
  3. Tapestry Needle

Finished Measurements:  77″ x 18″

Abbreviations:

ch – chain
dc – double crochet
sc – single crochet
sp(s) – space(s)
tr – treble

Special Stitches:

Picot:  ch 3, insert hook in first ch, YO, pull through both loops on hook.

Notes:

  • Ch 1 is not considered the first sc in the row.
  • Ch 3 is considered the first dc in the row.  You can use the alternative st if you want to try it out.
  • Ch 4 is considered the first tr in the row.
  • Ch 6 is considered the first tr and ch-2 in the row.
  • Multiples of 4 plus 2
  • You will need appoximately 40 grams of yarn remaining in your second skein to complete the edging.  I did not crochet a single crochet edging along the sides of the project because I felt it would take away from the design element.  You can choose to do so if you desire.

Edging

After completing your last row, turn your work, begin Row 1 of the edging.  Once you have completed this side of the edging.  Fasten off.  Weave in the ends.  Turn your work with wrong side facing, join by sl st to row 1 then begin the instructions below.

Row 1:  Ch 1, sc in first st, *3 sc in ch-5 sp, sc in next st, repeat from * across, turn.

Row 2:  Ch 3, dc in next st and each rem st across, turn.

Row 3:  Ch 1, sc in first st, *ch 3, skip next 4 sts, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st, ch 3, skip next 4 sts, sc in next st, repeat from * across, turn.

Row 4:  Ch 6, skip next ch-3 sp, *2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp**, ch 4, skp next 2 ch-3 sps, repeat from * across, ending last repat at **, ch 2, skip next ch-3 sp, tr in last st, turn.

Row 5:  Ch 1, sc in first st, ch 3, skip next ch-2 sp, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 3**, sc in next ch-4 sp, ch 3, repeat from * across, ending last repeat at **, sc in top of 4th ch, turn.

Rows 6-7:  Repeat Rows 4-5.

Row 8:  Repeat Row 4.

Row 9:  Ch 1, sc in first st, skip next ch-2 sp, *ch 3, (dc, picot) 5 times (See Special Stitches) in next ch-2 sp, dc in same ch-2 sp, ch 3**, sc in next ch-4 sp, ch 3, repeat from *across, ending last repeat at **, sc in top of 4th ch. Fasten off.  Weave in the ends.

2018 Christmas Present CAL Project #2

It’s that time again for another fun and elegant project.  Project #2 is all about feeling and looking elegant with a timeless shawl.  Since it’s for a Christmas Project, I decided to use Shawl in a Cake by Lion Brand.  The colorway Namaste Neutrals which has a little sparkle and shine to it makes the Soft Pebble Shawl the perfect gift.

Since you’ve been waiting a couple of weeks for the announcement of this pattern, I’m going to give you the supply list along with the pattern with the exception of the edging.  I thought this was a perfect compromise so you didn’t have to wait any longer.  Now you can get started!

3-double crochet decrease (3dc decrease) – YO, insert hook into next st, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops, YO, insert hook into next st, YO, pull through 2 loops, YO, insert hook into next st, YO, pull through 2 loops, YO, pull through last remaining 4 loops on the hook.

Notes:

  • Ch 1 is not considered the first sc in the row.
  • Ch 3 is considered the first dc in the row.  You can use the alternative st if you want to try it out.

  • Ch 6 is considered the first tr and ch-2 in the row.

Row 3:  Ch 4 (See Pattern Notes), 3 dc in next ch-5 sp, *ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-5 sp, repeat from * across until last st, tr in the last st, turn. (2 treble, 60 dc)

Row 4:  Ch 3 (See Pattern Notes), dc in next 3 sts, *ch 1, skip next ch-1 sp, dc in next 3 sts, repeat from * across until last st, dc in top of ch 4, turn. (62 dc, 19 ch-1 sps)

Row 5:  Ch 6 (See Pattern Notes), *3dc decrease (See Special Stitches)**, ch 5, skip next ch-1 sp, repeat from * across ending last repeat at **, ch 2, tr in top of ch 3, turn. (20 3dc decrease)

Row 6:  Ch 1, sc in first st, (ch 5, sc) in next ch-5 sp and each ch-5 sp across ending with last sc in top of ch 4, turn. (20 ch-5 sps)

Repeat Rows 3-6 until you have reached your desired width.  Fasten off.  Weave in the ends.
