Okay……So you are focusing on the fact that Christmas is oh so very near and time is precious. How about I give you something for FREE and all in one place so you don’t have to search for hours? It’s been unseasonably cold (even for Alabama) this year and from some of my fans and my observations in the crochet groups, scarves, cowls and hats seem to be a hot ticket item. I’ve included some patterns that even a beginner could try but could really be a quick and easy project for the expert. Let me show you a few.

There’s a few more beautiful hats and scarves that I’ve found for you that are easily downloadable from Craftsy. All you’ll need to do is set up a profile (which is easy and FREE). Once you’ve completed that simple step, you just download your pattern. How?

  • Click on the pattern you like.
  • Click “Add Digital Item to Cart”
  • Add to my Patterns

Now it will be on your patterns page when you want to take another look! It’s just that simple.

After you’ve looked over the customized page, you may want to look through their other wonderful patterns offered too. One of the great tools that Craftsy offers is that you can narrow down your search by selecting the Category (such as Crochet), Type of project, (hats, neck, etc), Made for (women, children, etc) and Difficulty (beginner, intermediate, etc). Plus if you look to the right-hand side of the screen you’ll see that you can Sort by: trending, lowest price, etc. Choose lowest price to start looking at all the free patterns!

I’m really happy to bring my Yarn Discovery back to the blog and especially honored to have Craftsy as a sponsor. If you follow me on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, you’ll remember me showing you a picture of the yarn goodies I received from them last week. Today I’ll be talking to you about Heartland Thick and Quick yarn and how much I loved it!

I wanted this blog post to be as informative as it could be, so I asked my ELK Studio Crocheter’s Group some of the questions they would love to know about a yarn they had never used. Let me start with the specifications of the yarn first:

  • 100% Acrylic
  • 142 grams/125 yards
  • #6 Super Bulky Yarn
  • Care Instructions: Machine wash gentle and dry on low heat.

Now let’s talk about some of the other things you really want to know:

  1. Can you tell me about the texture of the yarn?
    The texture is wonderful with the yarn feeling so soft and plush. I knew the drape was going to be wonderful for my Country Appeal Infinity Scarf.
  2. How far will one skein take you in a project?
    I used approximately 175 yds for the scarf project (so I needed two skeins) but only used around 100 yds of the skein for the hat.
  3. What do you think is the best type of projects for the yarn?
    I’m going to say a scarf and hat definitely would be a great choice. I also think it would be perfect for a headband too.
  4. What did you like best about the yarn?
    I certainly love the feel of the yarn. It’s by far the softest thick yarns I’ve used. Even though it was bulky, it still gave great definition to each stitch as you can see in the hat.

Once I finished the Country Appeal Infinity scarf and had the skein of Acadia left, I thought it would be great to have a simple beanie hat in the Thick and Quick yarn. I used a little of the Sequoia yarn around the brim of the beanie to tie it in together. Those two yarns definitely compliment one another.

Because I loved the way the beanie turned out, I’ve written the pattern instructions just for you!

Materials:
Heartland Thick and Quick Yarn, All the specifications are listed above. Approximately 175 yds with the scarf and 100 yards with the beanie.
Hook – N/10.0
Tapestry Needle for weaving in the ends.

Abbreviations:
ch – chain
hdc – half double crochet
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch

Using the Sequoia Yarn, ch 4, join to first ch to form a ring,

Round 1: ch 1 and 10 hdc in ring, join by sl st to first hdc. (10 st)

Round 2: ch 1 and 2 hdc in first st, 2 hdc in next stitch and around, join by sl st to first hdc. (20 st)

Round 3: ch 1 and hdc in first st, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st*, repeat from *to*, join by sl st to first hdc. (30 st)

Round 4: ch 1 and hdc in first st, hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next 2 st, 2 hdc in next st*, repeat from *to*, join by sl st to first hdc. (40 st)

Round 5: ch 1 and hdc in first st, hdc in next st and around, join by sl st to first hdc. (40 st)

Round 6: ch 1 and hdc in first st, hdc in next st and around, join by sl st to first hdc. (40 st)

Round 7: ch 1 and sc in first st, sc in next st and around, join by sl st to first sc. (40 st)

Round 8-13: Repeat Rounds 6-7

Change to Color B, Acadia Yarn

Rounds 14-16: Repeat Round 7, Fasten off and weave in the ends. I would recommend weaving the yarn in one direction then turn to weave in the other direction since it is bulky. I believe this will secure the ends and hold them in place better.

Flower Pattern:

Using Acadia, ch 4, join with sl st to form ring.

Round 1:  ch 1, 10 sc in ring, join with sl st in first sc. (10 st)

Change Color to Sequoia

Round 2:  *ch 2, 3 dc in next st, ch 2, sl st in next st*, repeat from *to* around (5 petals), join with sl st to first sl st. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

One more thing about the Heartland Thick and Quick yarn…..it’s a great beginner’s yarn. Why? Because I tried 5 different types of stitches and sizes before trying finding the right one which means I had to rip out the yarn 4 times and start over. Look at how well it held up to the “frogging”.
