It’s always a pleasure for me to design a hat specifically for a cancer patient and the Saving You Summer Beanie is perfect. As I sat down with the cotton yarn, I thought it was time for another hat for the chemo patients especially since I was just at Emory Winship hospital a few weeks ago donating hats made by the great gals in the ELK Studio Crocheter’s Group! The Saving You (From) Summer beanie is designed to have a somewhat open design while still allowing enough protection from the sun too. Many people getting chemo treatments still get cold in the doctor’s offices and a lightweight hat made of cotton is the perfect little trick. I hope you will consider making a few of them and giving them to someone you know that needs it or even donating to your local cancer center.

Pattern Instructions

Supplies:
1. Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton, #4, 100 g/180 yards, Colorway: Pale Denim (1 skein), approximately 120-150 yards
2. Hook – G/4.0 mm
3. Tapestry Needle for weaving in the ends

Abbreviations:
beg – beginning
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
rem – remaining
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
st(s) – stitch(es)

Special Stitches:
X-stitch: (skip next 2 sts as indicated, dc in next st, ch 1, dc in 1st skipped st)

Gauge: 16 dc sts and 8 rows = 4”.

Finished Size: Hat to fit head circumferences of (20”, 22”, 24”)

Pattern Notes:
● Ch 2 at beginning of pattern does not count as double crochet unless otherwise stated.
● Ch 1 at beginning of pattern does not count as single crochet unless otherwise stated.
● Ch 3 at beginning of pattern counts as double crochet unless otherwise stated.
● Hat is made in joined rounds with the right side always facing.

Round 1: Ch 4, sl st into first ch to make a ring, ch 2 (See Pattern Notes), 12 dc in ring, sl st in first st. (12 sts)

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each rem st, sl st to first st. (24 sts)

Round 3: Ch 2, dc in first st, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. (36 sts)

Round 4: Ch 2, dc in first st, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. (48 sts)

Round 5: Ch 2, dc in first st, dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. (60 st) Size Small, Skip to Round 8

Round 6: Ch 2, dc in first st, dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in next st, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. (72 st) Size Medium, skip to Round 8

Round 7: Ch 2, dc in first st, dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next 5 sts, 2 dc in next st, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. (84 st) Size Large, continue with Round 8

Round 8: Ch 2, dc in first st, dc in next st and each rem st around, join by sl st to first st. (60,72,84 sts)

Round 9: Ch 3, (See Pattern Notes), X-stitch (See Special Stitches), *dc in next st, x-stitch, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. (60,72,84 sts)

Round 10: Ch 2, dc in first st, dc in next st and each rem st around, join by sl st to first st. (60,72,84 sts)

Rounds 11-18: Repeat Round 9-10 (4 times)

Round 19: Ch 1, (See Pattern Notes), sc in first st and each rem st around, join by sl st to first st. (60, 72, 84 sts)

Round 20: Repeat Round 19, Fasten off. Weave in the ends.

I have a friend whose brother is going through chemotherapy right now and while there isn’t much I can do for him…..the Stay Strong Beanie will hopefully put a little smile on his face!

Pattern Instructions

1. Red Heart Soft or equivalent. 256 yds 5oz/141grams You will need approximately 150-180 yards Colorway: Charcoal, Light Gray, and White
2. Crochet Hook Size – I
3. Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends.

Gauge:
8 stitches and 4 Rows = approximately 2 inches.

Will fit average size adult approximately 22″

Abbreviations:
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
hdc – half double crochet
Reverse SC – Also known as the crab stitch, is made by doing a single crochet stitch but in the opposite direction. Right-handed people work from left to right and left-handed people from right to left. Moogly has a tutorial if you need help. Click HERE.
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip st
sp – space

Color Sequence:
Color A – Charcoal
Color B – Light Gray
Color C – White

Using Color A, ch 4, sl st into first ch to make a ring.

Round 1: ch 2, 12 dc in ring, join by sl st in first dc. (12 st)

Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st, join by sl st in first dc. (24 st)

Round 3: ch 2 and dc in first st, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next st, 2 dc in next st*, repeat from *to*, join by sl st in first dc. (36 st)

Round 4: ch 2 and dc in first st, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next st*, repeat from *to*, join by sl st in first dc. (48 st)

Round 5: ch 2 and dc in first st, dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next 3 st, 2 dc in next st*, repeat from *to*, join by sl st in first dc. (60 st)

Round 6: ch 2 and dc in first st, dc in next st and around, join by sl st in first dc. (60 st)

Change to Color B

Round 21: Reverse sc in previous st and reverse st in each st around, join by sl st in first reverse sc. (see above in the abbreviations and link for help with the Reverse sc).

Fasten off and sew in loose ends.
