How to Close a Hole in the Top of a Beanie Tutorial by ELK Studio

I’ve been asked if I could show how to close the hole in the top of a beanie hat when it’s been crocheted from the bottom up!  It really is simple to do and you’ll get the hang of it pretty quick!

Once you finish crocheting the hat, leave yourself an extra long tail (6″-8″).  Thread your needle with the tail, *insert the needle under both loops of your stitch, pull through, skip the next st and repeat at * until you’ve made it all the way around the beanie.  Turn the hat inside out and pull the yarn until you have tightly closed the hole.  Weave the yarn through the yarn for a few more times then fasten off!

Stay Strong Beanie!

For any of you that follow me, you know that giving my hats away for charity or to someone in need is very important to me. I have a friend whose brother is going through chemotherapy right now and while there isn’t much I can do for him…..the Stay Strong Beanie will hopefully put a little smile on his face!

Guy hats are not easy to come by anyway (unless you are on the ELK Studio FREE Hat Patterns of course….)and when we are crocheting chemo hats, let’s remember the fellas! I hope if you come across this hat pattern on your crochet searches, you’ll pay it forward and give someone a hat!

Pattern Instructions

Supplies:
1. Red Heart Soft or equivalent. 256 yds 5oz/141grams You will need approximately 150-180 yards Colorway: Charcoal, Light Gray, and White
2. Crochet Hook Size – I
3. Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends.

Gauge:
8 stitches and 4 Rows = approximately 2 inches.

Will fit average size adult approximately 22″

Abbreviations:
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
hdc – half double crochet
Reverse SC – Also known as the crab stitch, is made by doing a single crochet stitch but in the opposite direction. Right-handed people work from left to right and left-handed people from right to left. Moogly has a tutorial if you need help. Click HERE.
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip st
sp – space

Color Sequence:
Color A – Charcoal
Color B – Light Gray
Color C – White

Using Color A, ch 4, sl st into first ch to make a ring.

Round 1: ch 2, 12 dc in ring, join by sl st in first dc. (12 st)

Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st, join by sl st in first dc. (24 st)

Round 3: ch 2 and dc in first st, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next st, 2 dc in next st*, repeat from *to*, join by sl st in first dc. (36 st)

Round 4: ch 2 and dc in first st, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next st*, repeat from *to*, join by sl st in first dc. (48 st)

Round 5: ch 2 and dc in first st, dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next 3 st, 2 dc in next st*, repeat from *to*, join by sl st in first dc. (60 st)

Round 6: ch 2 and dc in first st, dc in next st and around, join by sl st in first dc. (60 st)

Round 7: ch 2 and dc in first st, dc in next st and around, join by sl st in first dc. (60 st)

Change to Color B

Round 8: ch 1 and hdc in first st, hdc in next st and around, join by sl st in first hdc. (60 st)

Change to Color C

Round 9: ch 1 and sc in first st, sc in next st and around, join by sl st in first sc (60 st)

Change to Color B

Round 10: ch 1 and hdc in first st, hdc in next st and around, join by sl st in first hdc. (60 st)

Change to Color A

Round 11: ch 2 and dc in first st, dc in next st and around, join by sl st in first dc. (60 st)

Round 12-15: Repeat Rounds 8-11 (once)

Change to Color A

Rounds 16-20: ch 1 and sc in first st, sc in next st and around, join by sl st in first sc (60 st)

Change to Color B

Round 21: Reverse sc in previous st and reverse st in each st around, join by sl st in first reverse sc. (see above in the abbreviations and link for help with the Reverse sc).

Fasten off and sew in loose ends.

Hint of Spring!

The Hint of Spring beanie pattern is all about trying out a new stitch!  Have you ever used the Herringbone double crochet stitch?  It’s basically just a different way of double crocheting but the added hint of texture and definition of the stitch is amazing!  Plus…the Red Heart soft yarn is wonderful to use for this project because it really allowed each stitch to have its own “look”.  I hope you’ll enjoy learning something new!

Pattern Instructions

Supplies:

  • Red Heart Soft 5 0z/141 grams, 224 yards. Approximately  140-170 yds.  Colorway:  Turquoise and White
  • Hook – I/5.5 mm
  • Tapestry Needle for weaving in the ends.

 Abbreviations:
ch – chain
herr dc – Herringbone double crochet
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
st – stitch
YO – yarn over

Special Instructions for Herringbone st:   YO, insert hook into next st indicated, YO, pull through st and 1st loop on hook, YO, pull through 1 loop on hook, YO, pull through last 2 loops on hook. If you are visual, try watching the video tutorial by Moogly.

Gauge:  7 herr dc st and 6 rows = 2”

Finished Project:  Approximately 22″ in circumference and 7 1/2″ in length.

With Color A, ch 4, sl st into first ch to make a ring.

Round 1: ch 2, 10 herr dc in ring, sl st in first herr dc. (10 st)

Round 2: ch 2, 2 herr dc in each st, sl st in first herr dc. (20 st)

Round 11: ch 3 (counts as first herr dc here and throughout), herr dc in first st, skip next st, *2 herr dc in next st, skip next st*, st, repeat from * to *, join by sl st in top of 3rd ch. (70 st)

Round 12: ch 3 and herr dc in first st, 2 herr dc between next 2 herr dc and each 2 herr dc around, join by sl st in top of 3rd ch. (70 st)

Round 13: Repeat round 12

Round 14-15: Repeat Round 9

Round 16: Repeat Round 10

Rounds 21-24: Repeat Round 9, Fasten off and weave in the ends.
