Sometimes less is more……The Perfectly Simple Elegance Shawl is just that for you. I’m like most of you and ready for some warmer weather, so I picked up my spring and summer yarn last week and starting crochet. My intent when I sat down to start on the shawl was to work up something using different stitches…..but as I started playing with the Cascade Ultra Pima Cotton yarn, the double crochet stitches were turning out to be absolutely more than what I had expected! Hence, I used nothing more than double crochet stitches for the entire body of the shawl. Of course, simplicity does need a bit of elegance which is where the edging comes into play. I hope you’ll love it.

Edging Using Color B
Using H Hook (I wanted the edging to “flow”, so I switched to a H hook.
Row 1: ch 4 (counts as first dc and ch1), dc in first st, ch 1 skip next st, *dc in next st, ch 1, skip next st* until center [(dc, ch 2,) 2 times, dc] in center, ch 1, skip next st, {dc in next st, ch 1, skip next st} until last st, (dc, ch 1, dc) in top of 3rd ch., turn.

Row 3: ch 4 (counts as first dc and ch1), dc in first st, ch 1 skip next ch-1 space, *dc in next st, ch 1, skip next ch-1 space* until center [(dc in next st ch 2, skip ch-2 space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next st, (dc, ch2, dc) in next ch-3 space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next st, ch 2, skip next ch-2 space, dc in next st] in center, ch 1, skip next ch-1 space, {dc in next st, ch 1, skip next ch-1 space} until last st, (dc, ch 1, dc) in top of 3rd ch., turn.
Row 4: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in next ch-1 space, *dc in next st, dc in next ch-1 space* until center, [dc in next st, 2 dc in next ch-2 space, dc in next st, dc in next ch-1 space dc in next 2 st (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 space, dc in next 2 st, dc in next ch-1 space, dc in next st, 2 dc in next ch-2 space, dc in next dc] in center, dc in next ch-1 space, {dc in next st, dc in next ch-1 space} until last st, dc in top of 3rd ch, turn.
Row 5: ch 1, sc in first st and next st, *ch 5, skip next 2 st, sc in next 3 st* until last 3 st before center, ch 5, skip 2 st, sc in next st, (2 sc, ch 7, 2 sc) in center, sc in next st, {ch 5, skip next 2 st, sc in next 3 st} until last 4 st, ch 5, skip next 2 st, sc in next st and top of 3rd ch, turn.
Row 6: ch 1, sc in first st, skip next st, *ch 1 (dc, ch 1) 5 times in ch-5 space, skip next st, sc in next st, skip next st* until center, [ch 1, (dc, ch 1) 5 times] in center, skip next st, sc in next st, skip next st, {ch 1 (dc, ch 1) 5 times in ch-5 space, skip next st, sc in next st, skip next st } until last 2 st, skip next st, sc in last st, turn.
Switch to G Hook – I wanted the edging to have a “ruffled” appearance, so switching to G Hook tightened up the stitches on Row 7.
Row 7: ch 1, sc in first st, ch 1, skip ch-1 space, *[(sc, ch 3, sc) in next st, skip ch -1 space], 5 times, skip next (ch-1 space, sc, ch-1 space)*, across until last 2 st, skip ch-1 space, sc in last st. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
