The poncho is made with the light and beautiful Cotton Fair Yarn by Premier! I used this yarn in the original Southern Diamonds Shawl and after many tries with other yarns, I went back to what worked the best for me! Plus, if you want to order the Cotton Fair yarn, use the code: KL001 and get a 10% discount when you check out! (Thank you Premier for loving the ELKies!)
While I did use a #2 weight yarn, I have worked it in a #4 worsted weight and it looked great too! So….I think it will just be up to you what you decide. I changed the pattern around a little to meet these accommodations and give everyone the ability to keep going or stop when they feel it’s the perfect size for them! That’s one reason why I didn’t release the pattern at the end of last year. I’ve made like 4 different versions to get it just right for you!
So let’s get on with the supply list and schedule!
Supplies:
- Premier Cotton Fair Yarn, #2 Fine Weight Yarn, 52% Cotton, 48% Acrylic, 317 yards/100g, Colorway: Plum (5 Skeins)
- Hook Size: G/4.00
- Tapestry Needle for Weaving in the ends.
Don’t forget to use the code offered by Premier: KL001 for a 10% discount at checkout. The code is good through February 28, 2017!
Schedule:
February 12th/Week 1 – Supply List and Schedule
February 20th/Week 2 – Rounds 1-15
February 27th/Week 3 – Rounds 16-26
March 6th/Week 4 – Rounds 27-36

Hi dear can u give me an alternate yarn as I don’t find the same in online also, how do I choose alternate yarn, from different brands, weight of the yarn is very important? Description has nothing relating to weight
Hi Hemalatha,
In the description, I state the yarn weighs 100 grams for 317 yards. I hope that helps you decide the yarn you want to use since the weight is important to you.
Try this link out. Maybe it will help! http://www.designz.shibaguyz.com/blog/yarn-substitution-help-is-here
Kathy
Thanks for a really lovely pattern. I have just discovered your work excellent starting this tonight. 😃
Kathy, I have a question for you concerning the yarn that I want to use for the CAL however I am not sure it will work. I was in Joann’s Fabrics on yesterday and found a very nice yarn in the bin with the Mill Ends bin. It says that it is “100 % Mixed Fibers, Acrylic, Polyester, Nylon, and Laine” I compared it to a ball of Cotton Fair yarn that I have and it seems to be the same weight. In your opinion, do you think this yarn will work for the CAL project?
Hi Sandra!
I think the Poncho is a very adaptable pattern so you can certainly give the yarn a try!!
Kathy
I’ve been looking for a great poncho to crochet, but have been worried I wouldn’t be able to do it. What better way than a crochet-a-long!? I can’t wait! 🙂
Yay! Yarn came today, all set for next week!
I look forward to this CAL! I’ll order the yarn soon and I want to make sure I order enough. I’m thinking large to 1X. How many skeins do you think I’ll need?
Elk studios is my favorite crochet site cannot wait to do this poncho !😇
Awww thanks Willy!
Excited to do this next CAL. Loved the Southern Diamonds shawl! Hopefully the yarn will arrive soon.
Fingers crossed it will!!
Scrolled through the comments and saw where you’d fixed a typo with the coupon code, but it looks like in the reminder after the supply list to use the coupon code it still needs to be fixed.
Thank you! It’s been updated!
I really want to get the whole pattern at once as a PDF as you mentioned, but I can’t find it in your Craftsy shop. Could you pretty please direct me as to how I can get the full pattern and info through that route? My health is poor and my memory is poorer, so I don’t want to mess myself up by following week by week. My brain/memory is just too sick/weak at this point, so I don’t trust myself. Thanks for any help that you would be able and willing to give me!
Hi Michelle, the PDF for the Poncho won’t come out until after the CAL is completed. After that I’ll provide the link for everyone!
OK great! Thank you! :0)
I have used this yarn before and love it. still had three skeins, so that helps my budget. so soon as I get my yarn I will bee ready to go!
Yay!!! Glad you’ll be joining us Carol!
Is we use worst er weight yarn can we follow your pattern when you post it? What size hook should we use? I am so excited to make it. Love the Southern Diamond patterns.
You can certainly use your worsted weight. The hook size will probably be an I or J depending on what yarn you choose. Look at the label and go from there.
Will the 5 skeins be enough for a medium to large size? Since I am ordering, I want to make sure I have enough. Thanks, I LOVE all these patterns! I have made everyone!
Hi Brenda! If you are ordering and want it on the larger side, maybe getting 6 skeins would be good. I would you have more than not enough!
Thanks, that was what I was thinking! I can ALWAYS use it for something! LOL
Kathy, is there a gauge for this beautiful poncho? I’ve got the yarn in my stash and I thought I could start on the gauge swatch. Thanks so much!
Ha ha LuAnn! Yep. It would be 6 V-sts and 8 rows = 4″
Thank you!
With a hook size of G/4.0mm
I love this poncho, and I definitely plan to make it. I think I will try to use the premier sweet roll yarn. Do you think that will work up well? It’s thicker than the one you’re using here, and it has 245 yds per roll, so I’m wondering how much I should purchase.
Hi Barbara,
I would probably get at least 5-6 of the Sweet Roll for this poncho. If you are ordering it on-line from Premier, don’t forget you can still use the KL001 code to receive 10% off your order at checkout!
How many yards did you use for worsted weight?
It’s hard to say for sure Rexanna because I ended up changing the pattern sequence. I would think it would still take around 900 – 1,100 yards though.
Kathy, this poncho is so elegant looking!! i soooo LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!! <3 <3 <3 it's beautiful!! i have no way of getting this yarn but i will do it someday!!! i so look forward to this pattern/cal!!! thank you for continually designing great items for us crocheters!! 🙂 you are such a blessing!!!
Awww! I’m so glad you love it Cindy! I’m sure whatever yarn you choose will be fabulous!
Wondering if this will be offered as a print pattern or will we be able to go back. I will be gone for the 2nd week but would love to make this.
I have the Print-Friendly button at the bottom that will allow you to print as you go plus the pattern will always be on the blog as free too! You can catch up when you get back Patricia! Enjoy!
thanks!!!
You’re welcome!
Tried to order the yarn and the 10% code was not accepted???
Hi Dawn,
I had a typo. It is KL001. I’ve updated the blog post to reflect the change. Let me know if you still have problems!
Kathy
Thank you! I will try again!
❤️
