Crochet was more than just a hobby for Angela, it helped her heal emotionally while creating loving and lasting projects.
Who Taught You to Crochet?
My great grandmother when I was six years old. I played around with it on and off for years (more off than on) till 9 years ago when I took it back up and my husband’s grandmother taught me more. And, as I progressed I used YouTube.
How Long Have You Been Crocheting?
For 36 years but for 6 years steadily.
Why is Crochet More than Just a Hobby to You?
9 years ago I was hurt at work and between the pain, fighting workman’s comp and the battle inside myself because I was worthless I was lost in self-destruction mentally. Four years later (5 yrs ago) I finally had surgery that was supposed to fix my back so I could be normal again and go back to my work which was the only thing I had ever done nursing. Well, workman’s comp fought me long enough that I had permanent nerve damage. I could still walk but only short distances and my pain was still there. I was mad, sad, hurt that I could never do my job again so what do I do now? I did cross stitch but it required so much detail I couldn’t do it so I thought why not crochet. Well, I still had a hook somewhere and yarn somewhere so I hunted for hours until my husband came home and asked why I was so upset. I told him what I wanted to do and he immediately took me to the store and made me pick out hooks and he picked out some yarn for me to make him something lol and I got a big skein of cheap yarn to practice. If it wasn’t for that day and deciding to crochet again I don’t know where I would be. It helped my depression and anxiety and gave me something to do with my time instead of thinking about how bad it was. Crochet brought me out of the darkness in my mind to the light of feelings of accomplishment when I finish a project to the excitement of seeing all the pretty things I can share with people young and old who love the craft as much as I do and when I’m down the crochet community is always there cheering me on.
