Mary is a self-taught crocheter who crochets stress away and to stay awake during long work hours.
Who Taught You to Crochet?
I taught myself how to crochet. When I was 16, the girls in my class that took Home-Ec were taught how to crochet. I didn’t take Home-Ec. I went to the local library, checked out a book on crochet. I read the book, started practicing the stitches. As I became comfortable with the stitches, I had to put away the crochet due to a family emergency. I did not pick up the crochet again until 1978. I was in my last year in college studying to be a nurse. Several of the nurses I worked with were crocheting to help stay awake, we were on the 11 pm- 7 am shift. I decided to go purchase some yarn, pattern, and hook. I didn’t realize there were different sizes in yarn and hooks. Needless to say, I bought everything wrong. I went ahead and made the baby blanket. I still have that blanket 40 years later.
How Long Have You Been Crocheting?
I have been crocheting for 40 years now.
Why is Crochet More than Just a Hobby to You?
I discovered years ago my crochet helped me to relax, stay awake at work, and a stress relief. Two years ago I was training for a new job, I would be in tears at the end of each day due to the stress of training and the pace at which we were being trained. I would come home, pick up my crochet. Within thirty minutes I would be calmer. I started taking my crochet with me to work. My crochet is my stress relief and my calming agent so that I may concentrate better.
