I am so honored to make some hats for these wonderful kids visiting here from a Ukrainian orphanage for the holidays. I started working on them a few weeks ago and it was easy to come up with the girl hats because I already have a few patterns, but the boy hats needed some work. Of course, the classic houndstooth beanie was an option, but I love to create new projects and this was the perfect opportunity.
It’s another simple beanie hat that works up really quickly. Lately my yarn of choice has been Red Heart Soft, so that’s the yarn for this project. I didn’t bother to try it out on other yarns because I think this pattern would work well with most worsted weight #4 yarns.
The pattern will fit someone with the average size head of 22″. Just to have complete transparency, I had to do an extra increase round on my hat in order for it to fit my husband (23″) with no other changes.
Pattern Instructions

1. Red Heart Soft or equivalent WW material. Medium/4
2. Crochet Hook Size – I
3. Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends.

I’m new to crocheting..to add an increase (to make it fit my dad’s big noggin) what do I do? Thanks
Kathy Lashley says
After you finish Round 5, you will need to do another increase round. Follow this instruction: Round 6: ch 2 and dc in same sp, dc in next 3 dc, work 2 dc in next dc, *dc in next 4 dc, work 2 dc in next dc*, repeat from *to*, join by sl st in first dc (72 st)
You will then pick back up on Round 6 on the written pattern but it will actually be Round 7 for you. Hope this helps.

in row 9 it says : Round 9: ch 1 and sc in same sp, sc in next hdc and around, join by sl st in first sc (60 st). Does this mean I sc in one and hdc in next then sc and hdc,sc,hdc…repeat to the end? or just SC. HDC then all HDC’s to the end?
Kathy Lashley says
Brandy,
You will ch 1 and sc in the first st and sc in each stitch around. Hope this helps.

Never mind I totally read the pattern wrong OOPS!

One more question… Is this size for a man or child? Is the man in the picture wearing this pattern size?
Kathy Lashley says
This hat is designed fir an adult. After the increase rounds, the flat circle ahould be between 6 1/2 – 7″
Brandy says
where would you increase at and how many? I’m new to this..
Kathy Lashley says
I’m not quite sure I understand what you are asking me. If you follow the pattern, it gives you the instructions on how to increase the stitches.

I have a question, I am at the end of the beanie, last row. Your instructions say to sc in next hdc, but in round 21(9) you say to sc? I’m confused….so should round 21 be hdc instead of sc?
Round 7: ch 1 and sc in same sp, sc in next dc and around, Change color, join by sl st in first sc. (60 st)
Round 8: ch 2 and hdc in same sp, hdc in next sc and around, Change color, join by sl st in first hdc (60 st)
Round 9: ch 1 and sc in same sp, sc in next hdc and around, join by sl st in first sc (60 st)
Round 10: ch 2 and dc in same sp, dc in next sc and around, join by sl st in first dc (60 st)
Round 11-18 – Repeat Rounds 7-10 (2 times)
Rounds 19-21- Repeat Rounds 7-9
Round 22: ch 1 and sc in same sp, sc in next hdc and around, join by sl st in first sc (60 st)
Kathy Lashley says
Cynthia,
On Round 22 you will sc in each stitch around. I will correct the pattern to say: Ch 1 and sc in same sp, sc in next sc and around, join by sl st in first sc (60 st).
Sorry for any confusion!

What would I need to do to make this for someone who has, say, a 23 3/4″ head? Hubby and I both kinda have big noggins. LOL
Kathy Lashley says
You could probably just do one more extra increase round or possibly two depending on your gauge. Hope this helps.

Kathy finished the hat and daughter loved it! Thanks! It was a bit big on her, is there a way I could add maybe a couple more rounds that be tighter ?
ELK Studio - Handcrafted Crochet Designs says
Theresa,
How old is your daughter? You could possibly just use a smaller hook, (size G or H) to achieve a smaller size.
Depending on her age, you could omit an increase round (Round 5), so instead of having 60 total stitches, you would have 48.
Let me know if you need any other help!
