Frozen Pond Beanie

It’s an honor to be the first designer in the “Make it for Me” event!  I think it’s quite fitting with such cold temperatures all over the United States that I called this beanie the Frozen Pond.  It’s going to take you out of your comfort zone with those double-layered stitches that I’ve used in the Made for the Cold Beanie and It’s So Good You’ll Borrow it Beanie.  It’s a pleasure to say that Premier Yarns sponsored today’s MIFM event with a giveaway!  Be sure to scroll to the bottom to register.

Supplies:  

1. Premier Everyday Yarn, #4 Worsted Weight Yarn, 113 grams/203 yards, 100% Acrylic, Colorway:  Spa and Cream
2. G Hook/4.0mm
3. Tapestry Needle

Abbreviations:
blo – back loop only
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
rem – remaining
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip st
st – stitch
YO – yarn over

Gauge:  18 dc sts and 10 rows = 4″

Finished Measurements:  (20″, 22″, 24″)

Notes:

• Ch 2 does not count as the first st.
• Ch 1 does not count as the first st.
• Ch 3 does count as the first st.
• Between Rounds 11-12 you may want to try this:  When ending Round 11 sl st into the ch 1 then sl st again into the st.  That will help pull the cluster stitches closer together and make a seam less noticeable.

Special Stitch:
Special Double Crochet Cluster (sdcc):  Yo, Insert hook into indicated st, YO, pull through 2 loops (2 loops of hook), YO, insert hook in front loop in round below, YO, pull through two loops (3 loops on hook), YO, insert hook in next st, YO, pull through 2 loops (4 loops on hook), YO, insert hook in front loop in round below, YO, pull through 2 loops (5 loops on hook), YO, pull through last 5 remaining loops on the hook.

Round 1: Using Spa, ch 4, join by sl st to first ch to form ring, Ch 2 (See Pattern Notes), 12 dc in ring, join by sl st to first st. (12 dc)

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in first st and each rem st around, join by sl st to first st. (24 dc)

Round 3: Ch 2, dc in first st, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. (36 dc)

Round 4: Ch 2, dc in first st, dc in in next st, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. (48 dc)

Round 5: Ch 2, dc in first st, dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. (60 dc)

Round 6: Ch 2, dc in first st, dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in next st, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. (72 dc) (5 ½” flat circle measurement) (Small 19-20”) Skip to Round 9

Round 9: Ch 2, dc in first st, dc in next st and each rem st around, join by sl st to first st. (72, 84, 96 dc)

Round 10:  Join Cream, ch 1 (See Pattern Notes), sc in blo in first st, sc in blo of next st and each rem st around, join by sl st to first st. (72, 84, 96 sc)

Round 11:  Ch 1, *sdcc (See Special Stitches) in first st, ch 1, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. (36, 42, 48 sdcc, 36, 42, 48 ch-1 sps)

Round 12: Join Spa, ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next ch-1 sp, *sc in next st, sc in next ch-1 sp, repeat from *,  join by sl st to first st. (72, 84, 96 sc)

Round 13:  Join Cream, Ch 1, sc in blo in first st, sc in blo of next st and each rem st around, join by sl st to first st. (72, 84, 96 sc)

Round 14:  Ch 1, sc in blo in first st, sc in blo of next st and each rem st around, join by sl st to first st. (72, 84, 96 sc)

Rounds 15-23:  Repeat Rounds 11-14 (For the smaller sizes, you may only need to Repeat until Round 20 before beginning the brim).

Rounds 24-26:  Repeat Round 14.  Fasten off.  Weave in the ends.
