From knitting to crochet, Fiona’s Crochet Story shares how she became a crochet designer.
Who Taught You to Crochet?
My grandma ‘tried’ to teach me to crochet when I was around 12. Unfortunately, she gave me a tiny hook, thin yarn and tried to teach me ‘in the round’. I failed, miserably, and gave up – knitting was better.
I next picked up a hook in my late 20s, attempted to make a baby jacket, but gave up and put it aside for years! Again, knitting was better, and I did a long stint of cross-stitching (even won awards).
How Long Have You Been Crocheting?
In around October 2012, a friend asked me to help her make some flower brooches to give as gifts. I again picked up a hook, discovered that it was WAY faster than the knitting I was doing for our charity stall, and got stuck in.
My pregnant sister, co-incidentally and unknowingly, gave me the Berocco Yarns’ “Comfort Knitting & Crochet Afghans” book for Christmas. There was a little baby blanket called Fish Ripples within the pages; I became determined to make it for her new baby (due early January). I made it, just.
Why is Crochet More than Just a Hobby to You?
Crochet for me has become my ‘down time’, my ‘distraction’, my creative outlet, my business, and my inspiration.
I sometimes look at the things I’ve designed and shake my head in disbelief. How could I, a “non-crafty person”, who almost failed art at school, take a piece of yarn and create THIS?
Last night, I released my 57th pattern and MOST of them have been designed in the past 2 years.
