Jazzed Up Version of a Simple Beanie Hat – Free Pattern

Introducing the “Jazzed Beanie”!

I love the simplicity of a beanie hat and how quickly it works up when you have that last-minute gift to make, but I do admit that I bore easily and get tired of making the same thing over and over. So, I sat down the other day and started playing around with some stitches and came up with this hat.

The stitch is slightly different from the regular double crochet, but it still has the great simplicity of a beanie hat and worked up really quickly. The stitching is actually thicker too which of course, is perfect for those really cold days.

As I always do, I tried out several different yarns to figure out which one worked best and seemed to fit the stitches the best. I tried Caron Simply Soft, Lion Brand, and Red Heart Soft and actually was very pleased with all the variations. The best as far as the join goes, is Caron Simply Soft.

I configured the hat to fit 22″. When I completed my increase rounds, my hat measured approximately 7″.

Written Instructions:

Supplies:

Any worsted weight yarn should be fine. I used Caron Simply Soft, Red Heart Soft, and Lion Brand for my projects.
Crochet Hook – I/9 5.5m
Tapestry Needle for weaving in the ends.

Gauge:
5-6 stitches and 4 rows = 2 inches.

Abbreviations:
adc – aligned double cluster
ch – chain
hdc – half double crochet
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch

Special Stitch:

Aligned Double Cluster – YO, insert hook into ring/st, YO, (3 loops on the hook), pull through 2 loops, (2 loops remain on hook), YO insert hook into ring/st, YO, (3 loops on the hook), pull through 2 loops, pull through remaining 3 loops on hook.

Hint: If you have ever worked a dc2tog, it’s basically the same thing but you are working in the same stitch instead of working over 2 stitches. Some of you may also may try to skip the ch 2 at the beginning, but I wouldn’t recommend it. You won’t like the amount of space it will leave between your stitches.

Pattern:

Ch 4, sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Ch 2 does not count as first dc throughout the pattern.

Round 1: ch 2, work ADC in ring 10 times. sl st to first ADC (10 ADC)

Round 2: ch 2 and work 2 ADC in same st, 2 ADC in next st and around, sl st to first ADC (20 ADC)

Round 3: ch 2 and ADC in same st, 2 ADC in next st, *ADC in next st, 2 ADC in next st*, repeat from *to* around, sl st to first ADC (30 ADC)

Round 4: ch 2 and ADC in same st, ADC in next st, 2 ADC in next st, *ADC in next 2 st, 2 ADC in next st*, repeat from *to* around, sl st to first ADC (40 ADC)

Round 5: ch 2 and ADC in same st, ADC in next 2 st, 2 ADC in next st, *ADC in next 3 st, 2 ADC in next st*, repeat from *to* around, sl st to first ADC (50 ADC)

Round 6: ch 2 and ADC in same st, ADC in next st and around, sl st to first ADC (50 ADC)

Rounds 7-13: Repeat Round 6

Round 14: ch 1 and hdc in first st, hdc in next st and around, sl st to first hdc (50 st)

Round 15: ch 1 and sc in first hdc, sc in next hdc and around, sl st to first sc. (50 st) Fasten Off

Weave in the ends.

Free Crochet Hounds Tooth Hat Pattern

Before my computer crashed earlier this week, I had almost completed the free pattern of my Hounds Tooth hat. I picked up the computer and thankfully the data was saved and placed on an external hard drive. Because of the delay, I has some time and decided to play around with some different yarns. Here are the results:

I used Caron Simply soft in the hat pictured below. It’s what I used when I made the Hounds Tooth scarf, so I figured it would be a good place to start. I made this hat for my husband and had to do an extra increase round in order for it to fit him. To be honest though, I have worked with the Sinfonia cotton yarn since the beginning of the year and it could have been my tension was too tight. As I progressed with different yarns, I was able to follow my pattern without any changes.

I also tried Red Heart Soft for the dark/light brown hat (my favorite one out of the bunch). The hat worked up pretty quickly, but I think my only disappointment is the yarn had the tendency to “snag” a little easier than expected. The result was still good though as this yarn has more of a sheen to it than Caron Simply Soft. I followed my pattern exactly and the hat actually fit Emory. I wanted to see how big the hat would turn out if I did an extra increase round. It fit Emory but it wasn’t as snug as you would want a beanie to fit. Of course, you can see the color and so you know that he wouldn’t let me take his picture! You’ll just have to take my word for it.

The last yarn I decided to use was I Love This Yarn by Hobby Lobby. I really liked the yarn for this particular project. I didn’t have to worry about my tension and could just crochet. I followed the directions without incident. The hat would fit the average person’s head (22 in.). I liked the sheen to the Red Heart the best but as far as the way the hat looks and the overall ease of the material, I probably will make most of the hats using ILTY. Here are some examples from the Hobby Lobby yarn.

Supplies:

I love This Yarn by Hobby Lobby
Crochet Hook Size – I
Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends.

Gauge: Approximately 5-6 stitches and 6 Rows = 2 in. (Measurements used from the rounds using the hdc st.

Abbreviations:

sc – single crochet

hdc – half double crochet

dc – double crochet

sl st = slip stitch

YO – yarn over

Reverse SC – Also known as the crab stitch, is made by doing a single crochet stitch but in the opposite direction. Right-handed people work from left to right and left-handed people from right to left.

On each round of the rows I will instruct you to ch 1. This does not count as a sc/hdc/dc throughout the pattern.

ch 4, sl st into first ch to make a ring.

Round 1: ch 1, 12 hdc in ring, sl st in first hdc (12 st)

Round 2: ch 1, 2 hdc in each hdc, sl st in first hdc (24 st)

Round 3: ch 1 and hdc in same sp, work 2 hdc in next hdc, *hdc in next hdc, work 2 hdc in next hdc , repeat from * to *join by sl st in first hdc (36 st)

Round 4: ch 1 and hdc in same sp, hdc in next hdc, work 2 hdc in next hdc, *hdc in next 2 hdc, work 2 hdc in next hdc*, repeat from * to * join by sl st in first hdc (48 st)

Round 5: ch 1 and hdc in same sp, hdc in next 2 hdc, work 2 hdc in next hdc, *hdc in next 3 hdc, work 2 hdc in next hdc*, repeat from * to * join by sl st in first hdc (60 st)

Round 6: ch 1 and sc in same st, *dc in next st, sc in next st* repeat from * to * until last dc, sl st to first sc, (60 st)

Round 7: ch 1 and hdc in same sp, hdc in next st and around, join by sl st in first hdc and change color.

Round 8: ch 1 and sc in same st, *dc in next st, sc in next st* repeat from * to * until last dc, change color, sl st to first sc,

Round 9: ch 1 and dc in same st, *sc in next st, dc in next st* until last sc, change color, sl st to first dc.

Round 10: ch 1 and sc in same st, *dc in next st, sc in next st* repeat from * to * until last dc, change color, sl st to first sc,

Round 11: ch 1 and dc in same st, *sc in next st, dc in next st* until last sc, sl st to first dc. (do not change color)

Round 12– 14: ch 1 and hdc in same sp, hdc in next st and around, join by sl st in first hdc.

Round 15-18: Repeat rounds 8-11

Round 19-21: ch 1 and hdc in same sp, hdc in next st and around, change color, join by sl st in first hdc.

Round 22: ch 1 and sc in same sp, sc in next st and around, join by sl st in first sc.

Round 23: Reverse sc in previous st and reverse st in each st around, sl st in first reverse sc. (see above in the abbreviations for help with the Reverse sc).

Fasten off and sew in loose ends.

I totally believe in free enterprise and give permission to sell products made from this hat. Just do me a favor and give me credit for the design!

Free Crochet Pattern of a Hounds Tooth Tote

ELK Studio has been crazy busy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way! I love having a crochet hook in my hands and creating something that makes me smile.

I started working on this Hounds Tooth tote a couple of months ago and the pattern is now ready! I used Sinfonia cotton yarn because it’s hot outside and this has been my go to yarn all summer. I really love the feel of the yarn and it has a “sheen” to it that I think gives the project a quality look. You can find a select few colors of this yarn from Hobby Lobby (definitely the black and white), but I love ordering from Creative Yarn Source. I haven’t tried this project using a different yarn, but I’m sure it would work out fine with any other sport weight yarn.

The tote is so much fun to make and works up nicely. The end project measured approximately 10 inches in length and 9-9 1/2 inches wide. The strap length is more of a personal preference and can be different for each person. I made one for someone that wanted to wear it across her body, so it needed to be longer.

Crochet Hook Size – G
Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends.
D Rings – Purchased from Hobby Lobby

Gauge: 10 stitches and 8 Rows = approximately 2 inches.

Abbreviations:

ch – chain

st – stitches

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet

sl st – slip stitch

Instructions:

I carried the unused portion along with me and did not cut the yarn at the end of a round. I demonstrate how to carry along with yarn on my Hounds Tooth Scarf pattern. You can choose to cut the yarn but the integrity of the purse would be lessened and not to mention all the ends of weaving you would have to take care of!

Ch 88 using black yarn

Ch 1 does not count as a stitch throughout this pattern.

Round 1: Continue using the black yarn and join with sl st in first sc, ch 1 sc in same st and in each ch around, sl st to first sc. (88 st) Make sure you chain is straight when joining!!!

Round 2: Continue using black yarn and ch 1 and sc in same st, *dc in next st, sc in next st* repeat from * to * until last dc. Work dc until 2 loops left on hook, change color, complete dc, sl st to first sc,

Round 3: ch 1 and dc in same st, *sc in next st, dc in next st* until last sc. Work sc until 2 loops left on hook, change color, complete sc, sl st to first dc

Repeat rows 2-3 until the bag reaches your desired height and finish with a sc in each st around. (End your rows with black yarn) Finish off. (I had approximately 30 rows including sc row.)

Joiner Strap for D rings and Straps: – I used black yarn

To attach the joiner strap, remember you have 88 stitches around, it will take 8 stitches for each joiner strap for a total of 16 stitches. That will leave you 72 stitches (36 stitches for the front of the purse and 36 for the back)

Count 4 sc to the right (to the left if you are left-handed) of your join and begin the joiner strap here.

Row 1: ch 1 and sc in same st, sc in next 7 sc, ch 1, turn (8 st)

Row 2: sc in first sc and in next 7 sc, ch 1 turn (8 st)

Repeat Row 2 an additional 5 rows. You will have a total of 7 rows. Fasten off leaving a long tail for stitching your joiner strap together. Place the D ring and sew the joiner strap together using tapestry needle.

Count 36 st to your right (to the left if you are left-handed) and in the next st repeat the above process beginning with Row 1

Purse Flap: – I used black yarn

You will now make the flap for your purse. There should be a total of 36 stitches in between each joiner strap. Below are some suggested numbers of rows, but you can adjust according to your liking.

Row 1: Skip 1 st and join with ch 1 and sc in same st and next 33 sc. ch 1, turn (34 st). (Yes, you will have one empty stitch on each side of the purse flap).

Row 2: sc in first sc and next 33 sc, ch 1, turn (34 st)

Repeat Row 2 for 26 rows.

Row 27: sc in first sc and next 14 sc, ch 4, skip next 4 st, sc in next 15 sc, ch 1, turn

Row 28: sc in first sc and next 14 sc, sc in next 4 sc, sc in next 15 sc, ch 1, turn (34 st)

Repeat Row 28 once. Finish off.

Edging for purse flap:

Remember I left 1 stitch open between your joiner and purse flap? Ch 1 and sc in that st and then sc around the outer edging of the flap evenly until you reach the corner then sc twice and then continue sc until reaching the next corner and sc twice and then continue sc evenly until you reach the edge and sc and sl st in the remaining one stitch between the flap and joiner strap.

Closing the Tote:

Turn the bag inside out and using a long strand of the black yarn, whip stitch the bottom portion of the bag closed using tapestry needle.

Strap:

Ch 7

Row 1: sc in 2^nd ch from hook and in next 5 ch , ch 1 turn (6 st)

Row 2: sc in first sc and next 5 sc, ch 1, turn (6 st)

Repeat row 2 until reached the desired length. Fasten off. Join the strap to the D rings using tapestry needle.

Finishing:

Add a button using tapestry needle.

Block if needed.
