Following in her family’s tradition in crocheting, Amie has found an amazing way to crochet her stresses away.
Why is Crochet More than Just a Hobby to You?
I am self-taught. I remember watching my paternal great-grandmother crochet and admiring her creations. She always worked in crochet cotton and made beautiful baskets (made stiff with sugar water), doilies, gloves, and bedspreads. She crocheted her entire life, but quit the year she didn’t win the blue at the county fair! (She won for years and years).
My mother was attempting to crochet a sampler afghan (in the lovely browns and oranges of the early 70s) and I apparently was a pest… “How did you do that? What is that stitch? How do you know to change it?” etc. I was five! My mother is awesome but never had the patience to teach me anything because I have always been an OCD perfectionist and it drove her nuts, even then. So she handed me some yarn, a hook, and an instruction book, and said, “Have at it!” So I did.
How Long Have You Been Crocheting?
I have been crocheting for 41 years!

Gloves for my daughter – This is a hybrid – I used a pattern for the skulls and worked the gloves as I went.
Who Taught You to Crochet?
Crochet is my sanity. It is one of the few ways my OCD and ADD are soothed, and probably the only reason I survived all the years it wasn’t kosher to diagnose those things! I love working with all weights, fibers, and textures. I’ve made huge bedspread afghans, lace gloves, sweaters, graphghans… I even made all of my Barbie clothes as an adolescent! I follow patterns, design my own creations, and sometimes I get something in my head and make it up as I go along. I like to mix it up and usually have 8-10 projects going at any given time.
