I showed you last week the baby blanket I made for the début of my granddaughter, Ella.  It’s been a while since making a blanket, but it turned out better than I thought.  I didn’t feel much like using the traditional pinks for the blanket and Red Heart Yarn did just send me some beautiful yarn earlier this month so why not put it to good use right?  I used the Red Heart Soft Teal and Seafoam that came in the package and had the white in my stash.  It’s definitely worthy of using on this blanket or any other project you want to look great!

I probably should give you a disclaimer now that the pattern may look slightly different from the photo (around the edging).  I sometimes have a tendency to just sit down and start crocheting (well more than sometimes) and this blanket was no different.  Once I finished the main part and was ready to do the edging, I realized that in order for it to look right, I had to “work” with it and tweak a few things, but no worries for you because I knew exactly what I had done and you won’t have the same problem!  It’s all fixed now.  You can see the mini-me version below.

If you are wanting to crochet the letters for your blanket, Moogly has the best instructions!  They are easy to read and she also uses graphs in her pattern too.  I’m so glad I remembered that she did the alphabet because I believe it really sets the blanket apart from others and really gives it such a personal touch.  Thanks Tamara!

Pattern Instructions

 

Supplies:

• Red Heart Soft, or any worsted weight #4 yarn, Approximately 475-525 yards of Main Color, 300-325 of Alternate color
• Hook Size – I/5.5
• Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends.

Gauge:
It’s not really important to meet a certain gauge. The blanket will work with whatever size you choose. The dimensions on my blanket with edging was 30″ x 60″

Abbreviations:
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
hdc – half double crochet
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
tr – treble crochet

Hints and Tips:

• To color change:  On the last sc, insert hook, YO, pull up loop, you have two loops on your hook, pull new color through, ch 1, turn
• You are not going to cut your yarn at the end of each row. You will carry your unused yarn along with you. I show this technique on my Houndstooth Infinity Scarf pattern.  Although you do not have to carry your color along once you reach row 14 because it will be all one solid color but will start carrying the color again after row 50.
• Odd rows will be your main color and even rows will be your alternate color and your edging.
• If you use the alphabet for your blanket, please take that into consideration for your sizing of the project.

Chain in multiples of 3 + 2 chs

Ch 90 + 2

Row 1. ( Sc, 2 dc) in 2nd ch from hook, *skip 2 ch, (sc, 2 dc) in next ch*, repeat from *to*, sc in last ch, change color, turn
Row 2: ch 1, (sc, 2 dc) in first sc, *skip two st, (sc, 2 dc) in next st*, repeat from *to*, sc in last sc, turn, change color.
Row 3 – 13: Repeat row 2 changing color after each row.
Row 14 – 49: Repeat row 2 using only the main color.
Row 50 – 63 Repeat Row 2 changing color after each row.

Border:

Hint: On the beginning row, sc in bottom loop of sc and 2 sc in ch 2 sp.

Round 1: With the right side facing, join your border color with sl st in any corner, ch 1, 3 sc in same st, *sc evenly across to the next corner, 3 sc in next corner*, repeat from *to *, join with sl st to first sc.
Round 2: ch 1, sc in same sp, 3 sc in next corner st, *sc in next st across to next corner, 3 sc in next corner*, repeat from *to*, join with sl st to first sc.

Flower Pattern:

MC – Main Color
AC – Alternate Color

ch 4, sl st in first ch to make ring,
Round 1: With MC, ch 3 (counts as a hdc, ch 1), *1 hdc in ring, ch 1*, repeat from *to* 6 times, join with sl st in top of 2nd ch of beg ch 3, fasten off color.
Round 2: Join AC in any ch 1 sp, ch 2 (counts as first hdc), {1 dc, 1 tr, 1 dc, 1 hdc} in same sp, {1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 tr, 1 dc, 1 hdc} in each ch 1 sp around, join with sl st to top 2nd ch. (8 petals)
Round 3: ch 1, *{2 sc in next st} 4 times, sl st in next st, repeat from * 7 more times, join with sl st in first sc, fasten off.

So if you are in a hurry and need a quick project for an upcoming baby shower.  I’m sure the project in the photo below will still get some “oh, how cute” out of folks.  Just tell them it’s a mini-me blanket for the baby to hold while napping.  This mini version was also done using Red Heart Gumdrops Yarn for the variegated color and white Red Heart Soft.  It’s my first time using the yarn, but I must say, it’s so soft and perfect for the precious baby.  Also, if you aren’t ready to “carry your yarn along” in a project, this shows a great alternative to using variegated yarn along with a solid color.  I chained 32 to get this size.
