You know that I have to really love this Dixie Charm shawl for me to take a picture of myself and stick it on the blog! I attended my granddaughter’s dedication yesterday and went to the closest to choose something to wear. I bought the dress in the photo a couple of years ago while on a beach vacation in Florida. I thought it would be good for the service but definitely needed something to cover my shoulders. I usually wear a small white top but remembered I had just finished the shawl. I thought it matched perfectly! It was so much fun to wear and made me feel great knowing that I made it. I hope you enjoy the shawl and feel so elegant wearing yours too! I love it on Tiara too don’t you?
Pattern Instructions for Dixie Charm
Supplies:
1. Hook: I/5.5

3. Tapestry Needle for sewing in the ends.
Gauge: 20 st and 9 rows = 4”. (I don’t think gauge is a real issue here because people can just keep going until they have reach their desired length and width).

Hope you have a great day. Be blessed.

Brenda says

This was a joy to make. I used Paton’s Grace yarn in Orchid and made a super pretty light weight shawl for myself 🙂 I must make more of these as gifts. Worked up very quickly and nicely. Thank you so much!
Kathy Lashley says
I’m so glad you loved it!

Love this pattern, as I want a lacy lightweight shawl I am making up in zauberball 100 merino wool and using a 6.00mm hook, onto row 10 already and can’t wait to see how the colour changes come out.
Pam says
Thank you. I have been looking for the perfect pattern to make a shawl – not too frilly but something that has a classic look and feel. This is perfect!
Julie says
I have made two of these. So easy. Gave both as gifts. Think I may make a few up and see if they sell. Great and easy pattern.
Kathy Lashley says
That’s wonderful! Good luck in selling them! I hope they do sell for you!

YOU DO BEAUTIFUL CROCHET. I WILL; TRY TO MAKE SOME SHAWLS FOR ME SINCE I USE THEM AT TO BIBLE STUDY AT THE KINGDOM HALL CAUSE A/C IS VERY COLD. AND I DO NOT SELL THEM, RATHER GIVE THEM TO SISTERS OR MY MOM. THANK YOU FOR TEACHING SO MUCH BEAUTY.
Linda Conley says
Kathy – I have made two of your scarves and am in the middle of making your vintage violet shawl. I never have any problems with your patterns. In a moment of weakness I purchased three balls of Ella Rae Cozy soft prints in dk weight and now have set about searching for just the right pattern for this special yarn. In my list of patterns I came across Dixie Charm Summer Shawl and and wondered if perhaps I had found the right pattern. Then I read that not only could you use worsted weight yarn but sock yarn as well. Do you
think it would work with my dk weight which is 25% Superwash wool and 75% acrylic. It is such a beautiful yarn…..I could see it made into a lightweight shawl for summer. I know it is hard to give an opinion without seeing the yarn but I would appreciate your best guess. Also I was thinking about using a size “I” hook since there are not indications on the ball band about crochet hook size. What do you think?. Thanks so much for your time and guidance. I really appreciate it. Linda

I just finished this beautiful shawl for a dear friend, who just lost her sister.I loved how easy it works up. I just know she will love it. Thank you for sharing this.
Susan says
I’m so new to crocheting….I can’t even get 8 stitches at the end of row 1…..I only get six. What am I doing wrong?
Kathy Lashley says
Susan,
No worries. Don’t forget to count the 2 stitches that form the center too. 🙂

Carmen says
I’m hoping to make this using recycled yarn from a sweater. Within the sweater it’s 3 strands held together, but I’m thinking of separating them. If I do, the yarn I’d be using will be very thin, probably a 2 I guess – less than baby sport anyway if I’m judging correctly. It also means I’d be using a much smaller hook, probably a 3. So I want to make sure I’m understanding correctly, the weight of yarn/hook size shouldn’t be too much of an issue since I can just continue to work the pattern until I get it where I want it right?
The only thing I’ve ever made to wear is a scarf or 2 so I’m pretty excited to do this. I always have a million projects on the go so knowing me at the earliest it might be done for spring…which would work perfectly 🙂
Kathy Lashley says
Carmen,
The pattern is made to keep going until you reach your desired length, so I’m thinking it should be fine.
Kathy.
Carmen says
Thanks for the quick response! When I do get it done I’ll be sure to get a picture posted somewhere, probably on rav 🙂
Kathy Lashley says
Oh let me know. I want to see!

Just made this shawl in almost the same color – Pistachio. Living in FL I wanted something light and airy and this shawl fit the bill. Thanks so much for sharing!

Rosie Eva Coombes says
Firstly thank you for the great pattern 🙂 ever since I heard about it I have been looking forward to making it. Today I have started my shawl and I’m already in love with it.
I thought you’d like to know that ROW 5 has a typo, it’s the second side of that ROW as you forgot to add 2. I realised the mistake when I finished that row and the stitch count wasn’t right. I then checked my work against what you wrote and looked at what I’d done so far. That was how I realised your mistake as the sides always mirror each other. So I went back to the second half of that ROW and added the extra dc and problem was solved. I hope I am making sense?
(You’ve currently got written: ch 2 *skip 2 st, dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2* repeat *to* until end, 3 dc in top of 3rd ch, turn (40 st). All you need to do is put 2 in front of dc in next chapter-2 sp.)
I also wanted to ask, I am now at the stage where you say repeat row 4-9 until desired length. How many times did you do this to achieve your length before adding the edging of the shawl? Knowing this would really help me as I’m bed bound due to being severely ill so it’s hard for me to tell what length I should have as I can’t stand up etc. I’m looking for a result like yours.
Thank you for your help. I am a member of ravelry so I will have this shawl as a project on there. In fact I’m about to upload some work in progress photos. I’m very happy with the results so far 🙂 I’m using King Cole Bamboo Cotton DK which has been hand dyed in several lovely pastel colours. It’s looking amazing as well as feeling so soft.
Hope I’ve been of help and you don’t mind me pointing out the error 🙂 and if you have a moment to reply to my question ASAP I’d be very grateful.
Rosie 🙂
Kathy Lashley says
Rosie,
Thank you for catching the typo!!!! I’ve since corrected it. Also, I crocheted 38 rows before I started the edging. Hope this helps you.
Kathy
Rosie Eva Coombes says
Thank you 🙂 that’s great. So a total of 36 rows before the edging? I’m really getting into this pattern, I’m finding it very addictive so much so I struggled to put it down last night. I have a feeling it won’t take me long to finish and then I’ll want to make more :-).
Kathy Lashley says
No, it would be a total of 40 rows. 38 rows of the pattern then 2 rows of the edging. I love the pattern myself!! Glad you are enjoying it.
Barb says
I’m very new at crocheting but would love to give this a try. I, too, am confused on how to start. Is row one stitched inside the ring?
Kathy Lashley says
Barb,
Yes. Once you complete row 1 you will begin turning the project at the end of the row.
Val Martin says
This is perfect – I’m going to start this today with my Patons Metallic in Pewter.

Pamela says
I Got It!!! It was me. I forgot to add row 7. Duhhhh! Love it!! Love it!! Love it!!
Pamela says
Hi Kathy, I’m working your beautiful pattern now. And I have ran into a snag.. I’m having a problem with row 8. If each row increase by 8 then row 8 should be 72 chains and row 7 should be 64? What am I doing wrong? Help. I just love this shawl and I want to make it today. Thanks
Kathy Lashley says
Pamela,
If you increase by 8 each row this is what you should get:
Row 1 = 8
Row 2 = 16
Row 3 = 24
Row 4 =32
Row 5= 40
Row 6=48
Row 7 = 56
Row 8 = 64
Row 9 = 72
If you have 64 stitches for row 7, you’ve added 8 somewhere that shouldn’t be there. Hope this helps.

It’s really cute one..
Sarah says
This may be an obvious question, but I’m a little confused about how you start by making a ring but then move into rows. Could someone explain this? Thanks!
Kathy Lashley says
Sarah,
I understand how this can be confusing. When you normally start with making something in a ring, you are working in a continuous round. On this pattern, after you complete the ring and finish Round 1, you won’t work in the round but instead you will turn your project at the end of each row. I hope this makes sense to you. Let me know if you need any other help.

Winny says
I love the Dixie Charm shawl front but would love it to just be elbow length at the back ! Is there any way to make it elbow length at the back ? Winny.
Kathy Lashley says
Winny,
Without reconstructing the entire pattern, there really isn’t any way for you to get the amount of length you want in the front (enough to tie) and shorten it in the back. I’m sorry.
Kathy

I have a friend getting married next month,,, Dixie Charm fits the bill for her, her Mom and her sister. Thanks so much for sharing this lovely creation SMILE
Sheronna Rhodes says
Thank you for the pattern. Just finished making this yesterday for a friend. She wanted fringe so I added it after row 1 of the edge. It was done with RHSS so it’s a bit stiff but will soften after its first wash. Don’t know how to share the picture here but it will be on my Pinterest page. Thanks again.
Lynda Wood says
I love this shawl and want to make it for my Mom but I seem to be having trouble with the pattern. My sides don’t match up. Is this right? What am I doing wrong???
Kathy Lashley says
Lynda,
I’m so sorry you are having trouble. Do you think it’s possible your count is off? Remember to count the ch 2 in the center as 2 stitches. Both sides should have an even amount of stitches. Several people have worked up the shawl with no issues, so I’m hoping it’s just your stitch count. Let me know if I can help you any further.

Love this shawl! I have some lovely pima cotton yarn I was going to use for a sweater but didn’t like the outcome, now I can use it for this awesome shawl. Hopefully I’ll be done by next week and I can show it to everyone when I’m on vacation!
