Christmas Present CAL 2016 Project # 3 Week 1

It’s always fun to design a project which seems to have lots of interest.  The Sea Glass Basket is a fun project using the Bernat Home Decor Yarn!  You love how the bulky yarn just slides so easily through the hook!  The textured stitches along with the millinery wire used in the bottom and top of the project will also help hold the project’s shape.  I hope you’ll enjoy the pattern!

Supplies:

  1. Bernat Home Decor, 250 grams/317 yards, #5 Bulky weight, 72% Cotton, 28% Nylon, Clay, Cream, and Aqua
  2. J Hook/6.0 mm
  3. Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends.
  4. 3 yards Millinery Wire
  5. 2 Joiners

Abbreviations:
bpdc – back post double crochet
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
fpdc – front post double crochet
rem – remaining
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch

Finished Measurement:  Basket Circumference:  13″  Height:  6 1/2″

Gauge:  Not important for this project.

Notes:
Ch 1 is not considered the first st unless otherwise stated.
Ch 3 is considered the first dc in the project unless otherwise stated.
You can work the bottom of the basket in a continuous round or join by sl st. Whichever way is the easiest for you. I will be writing the instructions for join by sl st.

Pattern Instructions:

Round 1: Using Clay, ch 4, join by sl st to first st to form ring, Ch 1 (See Notes),  8 sc in ring, join by sl st to first st. (8 sc)

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st, join by sl st in first st. (16 sc)

Round 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, 2 sc in next st, *sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, repeat from *, join by sl st in first st. (24 sc)

Round 4: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, *sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc next st, repeat from *, join by sl st in first st. (32 sc)

Round 5: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, *sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from *, join by sl st in first st. (40 sc)

Round 6: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, *sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from *, join by sl st in first st. (48 sc)

Round 7: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st, *sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from *, join by sl st in first st. (56 sc)

Round 8: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st, *sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from *, join by sl st in first st. (64 sc)

Round 9: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st, *sc in next 7 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from *, join by sl st in first st. (72 sc)

Round 10: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next 7 sts, 2 sc in next st, *sc in next 8 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from *, join by sl st in first st. (80 sc)

Round 11: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next 8 sts, 2 sc in next st, *sc in next 9 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from *, join by sl st in first st. (88 sc)

Round 12: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next 9 sts, 2 sc in next st, *sc in next 10 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from *, join by sl st in first st. (96 sc)

Round 13: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next 10 sts, 2 sc in next st, *sc in next 11 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from *, join by sl st in first st. (104 sc)

Round 14: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next 11 sts, 2 sc in next st, *sc in next 12 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from *, join by sl st in first st. (112 sc)

Round 15: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next 12 sts, 2 sc in next st, *sc in next 13 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from *, join by sl st in first st. (120 sc)

Round 16: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next 13 sts, 2 sc in next st, *sc in next 14 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from *, join by sl st in first st. (128 sc)

Round 17: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next 14 sts, 2 sc in next st, *sc in next 15 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from *, join by sl st in first st. (136 sc) (Approximately 12″)

Round 18: Add Wire, (See Tutorial), Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next st and each rem st around, join by sl st in first st. (136 sc)

Round 19: Ch 1, sc in front loop only in first st, sc in front loop only in next st and each rem st around, join by sl st to first st.

Round 20: Ch 3, (See Pattern Notes), dc in next st and each rem st around, join by sl st to top of ch 3.

Round 21: Ch 1, fpdc around post of first st, bpdc around post of next st, *fpdc around post of next st, bpdc around post of next st, repeat from *, join by sl st to first st.

Round 22: Repeat Round 21. Fasten Off.  Weave in the ends.

Round 23: Join Cream, Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next st and each rem st around, join by sl st to first st.

Round 24: Repeat Round 23.  Fasten Off. Weave in the ends.

ELK Studio – From the Heart 2016 Fall Event!

Yay!  It’s time to kick off the ELK Studio – From the Heart 2016 Fall Event!  The Fall Event will include a couple of cancer centers.  They are all small centers but still need the donations of hats and such from the wonderful ELKies!  Crocheters are some of the most generous people I know and this event is very meaningful and we do make a difference!

The centers included are:  East Alabama Cancer Center and the John B. Amos Cancer Center

Charity Details!

Here is what they need:

  • hats (Adult Size)
  • lap blankets
  • scarves

Here are some guidelines for you:

  • Please remember to use acrylic or cotton yarn.
  • NO WOOL ITEMS.  
  • Place your items in a zip lock bag.  (A note with encouraging words would be wonderful)!
  • Please keep your furry buddies (cats or dogs) away from the item you will be donating.

If you need some inspiration for hats, I have a collection of hats my fellow designers thought would be good for chemo patients too.

You’ll love how simple the patterns really are and the color possibilities can be totally endless, but you’ll never go wrong with the classic black and white look!   1. Red Heart Soft, 141 grams/256 yards, #4 Worsted weight, 100% acrylic, Charcoal 55 yards, Light Grey Heather/35 yards, Black/35 yards
  2. H Hook/5.0 mm
  3. Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends.

Finished Sizes: Small (20″), Medium (22″), and Large (24″)

Gauge: 13 hdc sts and 10 rows = 4″

Abbreviations:
bpdc – back post double crochet
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
fpdc – front post double crochet
rem – remaining
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch

Special Stitches: If you need help with the 3-dc cluster stitch, click HERE for a tutorial!
