Last year when I was having “one of those days”, I decided to stop in at my local yarn store for a pick me up. After touching almost everything in the store, I picked out this Malabrigo pure merino wool. It felt so good but at the time I didn’t have anything specific in mind so it sat on the shelf patiently waiting.
I get bored easily and love changing up the types of yarns I use so the other day when I went into my craft room just gawking over the yarn, it caught my eye. I unraveled it, sat down with a hook and began playing around with it. Pumpkin Spice is what I came up with so far but I have another skein left… I’m thinking shawl, cowl or something to match the hat. What do you think?

I’m definitely keeping this hat for myself! Every year the hubby takes me on an anniversary trip in November. I can’t wait to wear it!!
Have a great day. Be blessed.

Good morning,
Just a question at the beginning, do you sl st the ch 90 to form a ring? If you do, could I just do 90 fhdc then connect? I always seem to twist the chain when doing it the first way I mentioned, and was wondering if doing the fhdc would affect the circumference measurement?
Kathy Lashley says
I wouldn’t think it would affect it too much. 🙂

Hi Kathy, I really want to accomplish this pattern, but already i’m have problems in understanding the beginning of it. What does it mean chain 90 (Use multiples of 2)? I chain 90, but is too big. I’m using #4 medium worsted yard and a F needle. please advise. Thanks Marilyn Rodriguez.
Kathy Lashley says
Marilyn,
The yarn I used in the pattern is a lot thinner than what you are using which is why 90 st is too big. You could try 60 st instead. I say multiples of 2 in case you needed to use less than 90 St which in your case, you do need less st.
Krista says
Started your pattern but realized I don’t understand the chain 90 using multiples of two. If I chain 90 the hat is way too big. Sorry I may have bit off more than I can chew here.
Kathy Lashley says
I used a F hook which is quite small which is adequate for the yarn. If you are using worsted weight yarn and a larger hook, you aren’t going to get the same gauge. Maybe try chaining less stitches. As long as it’s divisible by 2, you’ll be fine.
Julie says
After you done with CH 90 (multiples of 2) so you sl st and then start round 1?
Kathy Lashley says
Yes ma’am.
Julie says
I followed your pattern and my hat looks nothing like your. So i ask my friend the Pattern Queen to take a look and see if I am doing something wrong. She made the hat and hers didn’t look like yours in the picture either.
Kathy Lashley says
I’m not sure how else I can help you. I’m sorry it doesn’t look like my picture.

Having trouble with round 6 and 7. I read the comments but still do not understand. I have a ledge an don’t know where to go from there
Kathy Lashley says
Susan,
On round 6, you will crochet in the front loop only which leaves all the back loops stitches “open”. This means that on round 7, you will crochet in the back loops of those stitches left open on round 7. When you get to round 8, you will crochet as normal.
Kathy
Tracy says
I have this ledge( flap ) as well. I think either this is wrong picture for the pattern or there are too many typo’s. For example “This means that on round 7, you will crochet in the back loops of those stitches left open on round 7. ”
If anyone has figured this out I would also like some help
Thanks

Hi, I’m working on this hat and I too was confused with row 6 and row 7. But you cleared that up above. I do have another question that is row 7 do I begin with a ch 3 or just do a the 2dc?
Kathy Lashley says
Myrian,
You will crochet 2 dc in the back loop. The only way you could ch 3 is if you inserted the hook in the back loop first. I just thought it was easier to do 2 dc from the beginning.
Jenny says
Hello Kathy , I am confused on Round 1? Did you mean hdc in each st until the end of the row? Thanks
Kathy Lashley says
Yes but technically it is still a chain so that’s why I used that wording. Hope that helps. Enjoy.
Sue Wilson says
Kathy, this is so beautiful, thank you for sharing! I was hoping you could tell me if the yarn you used is equivalent to a 3 or 4 weight yarn?
Kathy Lashley says
It’s more of a 3. DK weight.

Rounds 6 and 7 have me stumped. So you work a round of dc in the FLO of the single-crochet round, then you go back and work a round in the FLO of that same single-rochet round? I’m getting this weird-looking “ledge” that’s sticking out of my hat- it doesn’t look anything like your pretty picture!
Kathy Lashley says
Lori,
Round 5: You work a normal sc round and when you join by sl st, you only join to the front loop.
Round 6: You work a the dc st in the FLO and when you join by sl st, you only join to the back loop.
Round 7: You will work your 2 dc together in the back loop only in the previous round (which is round 6).
I hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks Kathy, that does help. I guess I was thrown by the “previous round below” instruction in Round 7 – I took that to mean two rows below!
For Round 8, it says to sl st in space between 2 dc. Which 2 dc do you mean? The space created by skipping a stitch in Round 7, or between the first 2 dc? Also, where it says 2 dc in space between 2 dc, skip next st – should that be skip next 2 stitches? I am assuming I am skipping two dc instead of just one? Or maybe I’m just all confused (a definite possibility)!!!
Thanks for your help!! I will get this figured out yet 🙂
Kathy Lashley says
I’m not at home to look at the pattern but you will place them between the first 2 dc and then between the next 2 dc, continuing that all around.
Lori T. says
Beautiful! I am trying this with Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable. So far, so good 🙂 Thank you for the pattern!

Thanks so much for the lovely pattern! Working on it now with some hand dyed wool yarn.

Thank you, once again, Kathy, for another gorgeous hat pattern. I make so many hats and really appreciate new patterns to try. It’s next on my list! Thank you and bless you right back!
BarbaraR says
So…you don’t decrease the number of stitches at the top of the hat before you finish it off? Seems like 90 stitches would make a very bulky/bunchy ending.
Kathy Lashley says
Barbara,
Yes, I did decrease and have updated the pattern to reflect the decrease. I copied and pasted the pattern from my word document. I had read it some many times that I didn’t even notice that it wasn’t on there. Thank you!!

Thank You Kathy!!! I like this Pumpkin Spice Beanie! I love fall and all the beautiful color’s. I can hardly wait for the morning when I can go shopping for (more) yarn to make the beanie. This will be my first fall beanie, just for me, (might have to get extra yarn in case kid’s want one too!). I can’t forget that a scarf or cowl will go nicely as well. I appreciate your sharing!
