I rarely design a project with myself in mind. Yes, I create things I like but the Naturally Southern Scarf was intentionally designed for me to wear to the SNAP Conference coming up in April. It’s a conference geared specifically towards blogging. I’m excited to learn new tips and techniques to make ELK Studio even better but…..as a crochet designer, you just gotta wear some of your designs to show off your talent right? There is no better way to advertise your “brand” than to wear your projects which brings YOU the Naturally Southern Scarf pattern.

I started plundering in my stash last week and “rediscovered” the yarn. Isn’t it fun to find a yarn that you’ve had for a while? It’s probably the one of the softest yarns I’ve ever used and the drape is amazing. The stitch definition is so well defined that it makes to proud to show it off. I’ve never used a yarn that was 100% Viscose, but I can tell you it won’t be my last. Don’t you think the project is perfect for the spring and summer months? I can tell you that I’ll be wearing this project a lot!
In my internet search to provide the ELKies a source for the yarn, I came across the Skein Shop. Their selection of the Araucania Cana Ruca yarn is abundant with choices. I decided to keep looking around and found Sasha’s About page. It’s a sweet story of a small business with big dreams. That certainly spoke to me, so I wrote to Sasha on their Facebook Page asking her about the yarn and stock. She replied so quickly and assured me she had the Araucania Can Ruca yarn available for the ELKies. Below you can see a few of the colors but check out their site to see all the colors!
Wanna know something else? Shipping is FREE within the U.S. and only $10 to ship to Canada! Talk about customer service right? Plus I have another surprise for YOU! Let’s get on with the pattern right???
Supplies:
- Araucania Cana Ruca Yarn, #2 Sport Weight Yarn, 100% Viscose, 319 yards/100g, Colorway: Caribbean Burst
- Hook Size: G/4.00
- Tapestry Needle for Weaving in the ends.
Abbreviations:
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
hdc – half double crochet
st(s) – stitch(es)
Gauge: 20 dc and 10 rows = 4”
Finished Measurements: 39″ x 18 1/2″
Notes:
Ch 3 counts as the first dc in the pattern.
I used the entire skein with the exception of maybe a yard or two, so you can continue the pattern sequence if you desire. If you run out of yarn before the pattern instructions are completed, just end on an odd number row then finish with the instructions on row 86.

Thanks for this pattern, bought the same yarn and it’s turning out beautifully, Question, did you put a trim or edging around the shawl? My edges don’t look near as neat as yours.
Kathy Lashley says
Hi Carol.
I didn’t put a trimming. I did use a special technique when doing the ch-3 at the beginning of the pattern. You can find it here.
Sandy says
Hello Kathy
I have a question about row 8. When you say chain 1 skip a space and double crochet )twice, do you mean I am to double crochet twice in that same stitch? For some reason my shawl does not look like yours and I don’t understand why. Also, after I chain 3 do I crochet in exactly the next stitch or skip one and crochet?
Thanks for your help.
Kathy Lashley says
Hi Sandy,
Do you mean Row 10 because that’s where those instructions begin? When you see something in the parenthesis like this: (ch 1, skip next st, dc in next st) 2 times, what it means is that you will repeat the entire instructions within those parentheses twice. So instead of me saying ch 1, skip next st, dc in next st, ch 1, skip next st, dc in next st, I placed those instructions inside the parenthesis and said 2 times. Does that help you? Also, the ch 3 is considered the first st in the project, so you wouldn’t need to place another double crochet in the first st. Let me know if you need anymore help. I’d be happy to answer your questions.

Thank you for this pattern – I’ve just worked it up with some yarn I had on hand and it’s so pretty! i wonder if you might offer some guidance for my fashion-challengedness? I’m not entirely sure how to wear this shawl. Are there recommended best ways to wrap it? Does it stay in place best with a shawl pin or other fastener?
Kathy Lashley says
Hi Sarah,
The “long end” of the project will act as the point in the front then you’ll just wrap the other around. A shawl pin might work best to hold it in place for sure plus add to its beauty!

I, too, am having a problem understanding row 2. I’ve just recently started to crochet so am really confused as to where to put my hook. If I use markers to help me recognize where to put the hook, would I put the marker in the top of the Ch 4 from row 1? Thanks for your help!
Mary Baribeau says
Kathy, I don’t know how you do it. You’ve designed another beautiful scarf and the poncho. The poncho reminds me of the one I had when in high school in th early 70s. My aunt made it tor me back in 1971. Yes I’m telling my age. I give you a lot of respect because not only design all these different patterns but you work full time in the medical field and raisea family. I can say from experience of the medical profession because I am a retired nurse with 39 years. You are a multiple talented person. Not on the subject but several months ago you showed how to do an invisible join when working in the round. I hae been using that in a dress I’m making. I love it! It is so much neater on my rounds where I joined. Thank you for all the hard work you put into crochet design patterns and to share yoeations with fellow crafters means a great deal to me. I can’t speak for other crafters but I’m sure they would all agree with what I said. You are an inspiration to all of us who follow your blog.

Thank you for the pattern, Kathy! I am excited about starting it today! Love your blog!
Maria says
Bello… grazie 🙂
Janine Motsko says
I am just starting this and having a mental block with Row 2…
Row 1: Ch 4, dc in 4th ch from the hook, turn. (2 dc)
Row 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in top of ch 3, turn. (3 dc) ????
Once this is explained, I should be able to figure out the rest.
Thanks!
Kathy Lashley says
Hi Janine,
Remember the ch 3 counts as a dc so that plus the other 2 dc will give you 3. Hope this helps you.
Kathy
Janine Motsko says
What confused me is the 2 dc in top of ch 3. Did you mean top of Ch 4 from the 1st row (that’s what I ended up doing)? Also, should there be another DC in row 5?
Janine Motsko says
I just saw that you corrected Row 5. Since I saved and printed out the original version, I’ll have to download it again so I won’t keep pestering you 🙂

I’ve never used viscose at all and would be interesting to do so. Thank you for the pattern and opportunity.

I would love to make this scarf NOW (lol) however what modifications do I have to do if I am to use
#4? That’s what I have on hand. Thanks Kathy for sharing this wonderful pattern! Have a great weekend! 😊
Kathy Lashley says
Hi Deborah,
I don’t think you need to change the pattern but just know that your project may turn out bigger than the original design.
Deborah says
I was thinking the same thing but still needed your opinion. Thanks Kathy for answering my concern. I love your designs!

Is there a chart? Thanks if possible!
Kathy Lashley says
Hi Marsha,
I don’t have a chart for this particular project.
Thanks,
Kathy

Hi,
Thank you for providing this pattern & the giveaway.
I have a question on the pattern. Are we supposed to be turning the work on each row or am I just not understanding it?
Thanks
Sue
Kathy Lashley says
Yes ma’am. Turn. I’ll go update shortly. Something so simple, and I left it off. Sorry!!
sue says
Thanks. I thought I was missing something somewhere.
