Here in Alabama it’s still quite warm, but I couldn’t wait….I wanted to start making my winter hats. I love this beanie hat pattern because it’s fairly easy to memorize and makes for a quick project. The cluster stitches gives it some texture too which I love using for my hats. I hope you will love it!

Pattern Instructions
Notes and Tips: The stitches for this hat are staggered, so if you notice at the end of a round I’ll say, “Join by sl st” but also tell you to “Join by sl st” in the beginning of a round too. Don’t forget to do the second sl st or your hat won’t look quite the way you had hoped! The cluster stitches will not stack on top of each other on each round but will be staggered as in the photo above. Also, if you crochet “loosely” you may want to drop a hook size. Check your gauge!
The pattern is written without the changing colors instructions. At the bottom of the page there will be pictures and instructions on how to use 2 colors and 3 colors.

Round 11 – Alternative Color 2 (White)
Round 12 – Main color (Black)
Repeat color sequences of Rounds 10-12 until finished.

Cynthia says
Do you have a tutorial for this pattern?
Kathy Lashley says
Not at this time Cynthia. Maybe in the future.
Dianne says
I am stuck on round 11 where it says to cluster between the two hdc. If you cluster in the space between the two hdc, do you go back and use the one just before you slip stitched on round 10, or do you go forward to the next hdc? It would leave a space, wouldn’t it? It is 5 stitches from where my new round picks up. I’m confused. Please help! I love how it is turning out so far!!
Kathy Lashley says
Dianne,
Round 11: sl st between 2 hdc sp, ch 1, beg-cluster in same sp, *ch 1, cluster in center of next 2 hdc*, repeat from *to*, sl st to first cluster.
You will continue to go forward and do the cluster stitch between the next 2 hdc then ch 1 and repeat. When you finish that round, you will be joining by a sl st to the first cluster stitch, ignoring the first hdc. The cluster stitch is the “first” stitch of round 11. Does this help? Let me know.

Connie B says
My favorite hat pattern so far! I had never done cluster stitches before (had to look up a youtube video in order to “get it”) and once I conquered that first row, WOW, what an awesome look & feel it gives to the hat! Thank you for sharing this pattern. Too bad we can’t post images with our comments to show you our work 🙂
Kathy Lashley says
Thats awesome! You can always show it off on my Facebook page!!!
Bonnie McCauley says
I made this hat exactly to the pattern, it was so BIG, it hung down to my chin. Is there a smaller version of this ???
Kathy Lashley says
Bonnie,
Maybe stop your increase rounds with 60 st instead. That will definitely give you a smaller hat and may fit you better.
Hailey Alexander says
I have a question about what to do after round 7. You said if you want the smaller size 20-21 in, then skip to round 9. But then the stitch count is 80, where is was only 70 at the end of round 7. Where i am confused then is do i need to add 10 more stitches, or keep in mind my stitch count will be 10 less than what is in the ( ) for each round?
Kathy Lashley says
Hailey, you will need to keep in mind that your stitch count will always be 70.
Kathy
Hailey Alexander says
I just finished it, the top is kind of flat. Not round like all other hats i’ve done. I don’t know if its suppose to be like that.
Annette says
Love this beanie, however I am stuck on round 11. Do you cluster in the space between the sets of hdc or do you cluster in stitch between two hdc? Please help clarify.
Thanks!
Kathy Lashley says
Annette,
You will cluster between the two hdc and not the sets of hdc. Hope this helps. Sorry for the confusion.
Kathy
Annette says
Thank you so much! I finished my hat tonight and it turned out awesome! My daughter loves it! Thank you again for the extra help!
Kathy Lashley says
Yay! So glad to help!
Kathy Lashley says
Patti,
At the end of each round, you are sl st to join…but at the beginning of the round you are sl st between the 2 stitches again before starting. Are you doing both sl st. I guess I would need more of a description of why the hat doesn’t look like the picture. Let me know if this helps or what else I can do for you.
Kathy
Kathy Lashley says
I’m sorry Patti and not sure what’s happening.
Kathy Lashley says
No, you will only sl st as instructed on the pattern.
Kathy Lashley says
Yay!!! I’m so glad to hear it!
Carol Kaye says
I just came across your patterns via Facebook. I noticed you use a lot of Redheart Yarn. I live in the UK and do not seem able to buy over here. I am retired and on a limited budget so maybe having it shipped would be expensive. Can you suggest other yarns I might use. Xxxxxxxx. Carol
Kathy Lashley says
Carol,
Red Heart is considered a worsted weight yarn #4. I’m not sure what yarns you have access to but, I think any worsted weight would be fine using my patterns.
Good luck!
Kathy

I’m here via The Crochet Lounge. Where do you find such beautiful models??
Kathy Lashley says
The beautiful model for Kodey’s Beanie is my daughter-on-law (Kodey). The other young lady in many of my photos is someone I met a few years ago when I was giving a talk. We instantly became friends and she aspires to be a model and is currently trying to be discovered!
Terrie Zuleger says
Thanks Kathy! Love the new beanie. Here in NW FL we aren’t needing the hats either, but doesn’t mean we can’t hook them.
Nancy says
Hey! I’m in Alabama too. Central area. Teeny town called Rockford. 30 mins from Sylacauga, Alexander City, Wetumpka. Near Lake Martin. What part of the state are you in. And why did you choose the name “Elk”. Oh wait…initial s right? I think I remember that.
Kathy Lashley says
Nancy,
I’m in the Auburn/Opelika area! ELK did come from initials! War Eagle!

Thanks,

Thanks 🙂 Will do so.
Mary Joe says
It does fill in the gap a little but there is still a pretty large gap. Perhaps I’m doing something wrong. Might have to start over.
Mary Joe says
I’ve been trying to work this pattern and I was just wondering if there is supposed to be a gap between the cluster stitches. It’s hard to tell by the pictures if there is a gap between these stitches. Mine has gaps. It’s a beautiful hat! Can’t wait to finish mine 🙂
Kathy Lashley says
There is a small gap Mary Jo but on the next round you will do the 2 hdc st in the ch1 so so that helps fill it in. Let me know if this helps you.

Leslie Waldroup says
I am so confused. When I read through the written pattern starting from the very beginning, it only says to slip stitch to the first hdc. And in the beginning it also doesn’t state to hdc in the same space as slip stitch, but if you don’t then you don’t get 20 hdc. So my question is do I slip stitch to the chain one space and hdc in it and then also slip stitch into the next hdc and then hdc into that space. I know how to adjust patterns, but I feel like I am completely missing a key piece of info this time. I have only made it to row 4 and I know something is not right.
Kathy Lashley says
Leslie,
I’m sorry for the delay. I’ve been out of town with my husband celebrating my anniversary. On Round 2, you will sl st and crochet 2 dc in the same space which gives you 20 stitches.
Kathy
Leslie Waldroup says
Oh thank you!! What rows do I start slip stitching to join and then in the beginning round to? Will that be when I change colors?? Sorry I just hate getting it wrong! P.S Happy ANNIVERSARY! 🙂
Kathy Lashley says
You know what? I need to apologize for causing you problems. You will join by sl st each round. Give me a second to update the pattern. You may need to refresh your page you get tje current view.
Kathy Lashley says
Okay so i just changed the wording on round 1 and 2. Scroll to the bottom of the pattern to see the color changes. Hope this helps you.
Kathy
Kathy Lashley says
Maybe a smaller hook would close it in some like you say!’
