It won’t take you two seconds (well…maybe a little longer) of searching on Craftsy or Ravelry to find hundreds of projects for women but…..finding them for men is a different story. They are certainly on there but it does take a little more time don’t you think? That’s why I love this Hickory Bark Beanie, another free crochet beanie! It’s definitely textured to give that added layer of warmth, and I would say that’s important to the fella wearing it. Especially mine because as you can see…..he’s outside splitting wood!

Notes: Please read this before starting the pattern! It will help you understand the pattern.
Once you’ve completeed round 7, you will see there is a ridge formed inside the hat. That is cause by the fpdc pushing the top part of round 6 (the loops). Once you start round 8, you will fpdc around the first stitch then I tell you to dc in the loops of round 6. You will continue to fpdc around the next st (on current round) then go back to dc in the next dc on Round 6. So basically you are going back and forth which in the front looks like you are skipping every other fpdc stitch and in the back it looks like you are skipping every other dc stitch.
Here’s a photo showing what the inside of the hat will look like once you’ve completed round 7.
Here’s another photo of the inside of the hat showing what it will look like once you’ve finished round 8.

I made this hat one afternoon, out of some #5 bulky red yarn I had in my stash and got it hidden away for Christmas before my husband came home. He loves his new hat, and it was a total surprise.. It is perfect for cold days when he has to wash windows. Thanks for a great pattern!

Hello, can this hat be made with the Lion Brand #6 super bulky yarn?
Kathy Lashley says
Maybe but you would need to check gauge as that yarn would work up bigger, and I’m sure you’ll use a bigger hook too.
Astoria says
I’m very much a beginner crocheter and chose this as my first hat to make for my uncle. However, his head circumference is 24″. What would be the best way to increase this pattern? Needle size or perhaps special directions? Thank you!
Kathy Lashley says
Do an extra increase round in the pattern perhaps. That may work for you.
Astoria says
I’m sorry, I’m not quite sure how to do this :s
Kathy Lashley says
Astoria,
If you are a beginner and not sure how to increase, this hat may give you some problems. It has some areas that may be complicated for you but after you complete Round 6, you will have another round to do which will become your Round 7 then you will proceed with the remainder of the pattern which will now be increased by 10 stitches. Here’s what you need to do:
Round 7: ch 2 and dc in first st, dc in next 4 dc, work 2 dc in next dc, *dc in next 5 dc, work 2 dc in next dc*, repeat from *to*, join by sl st in first dc (70 st)
Hope this helps you.

Thank you so much, Kathy. I’ll give it a try!

HI please may I ask a question? I followed the working back and forth but does that mean you have 120 stitches? For row nine i have just sc in the fpdc which gives me 60 again. it is looking a bit of a bin lid but i think that is cos my wool is too chunky and I will probably have to go back and frog the last increase row.
Kathy Lashley says
You should have 60 stitches, so you are on the right path.
Babs McGinlay says
I frogged it and went down to 50 stitches. My chief hat trieroner my 18 year old son, said it was much better 🙂 Thanks x
Kathy Lashley says
Ha ha ha! I have a trieroner too! It’s my hubby!

Kathy,
I have another question about Hickory Bark I hope you can shed some light on. I have finished the 2nd round of fpdc , dc and sc them together—row 14, I think. What I have is about 10 inches across and 2 inches deep. Have I messed up somewhere? If I have to pull out stitches, I would like to do it sooner than later. Hope you can help me.
Thank you,
Evette
Kathy Lashley says
Im not sure I understand what you are saying or asking me.

I love the way this pattern made up. I just made the hat and can’t wait to see it on my nephew. It is also easy to adjust to the size you need it in.
Kathy Lashley says
Wonderful! I’m so glad!!
Astoria says
I am a beginner at crochet…. how did you increase/decrease to adjust size? I’m trying to make it to fit a 24″ circumferece
Kathy Lashley says
The instructions I just gave you will increase the hat. It added 10 more stitches to the round.
Constance says
I love this hat. The stitch pattern is wonderful. I was wondering if this is sized as written for a man’s head. I would love to make one for myself and didn’t see a finished size. Love all of your designs!
Kathy Lashley says
After the increase rounds, the flat citcle measurement was 7″ which is the aberahe size. The hubby likes his hat tight. If you want a smaller hat, try doing one less increase round
Diane says
Thank you for another great beanie pattern. I love making your hats. I have marked it a favorite in Ravelry. It will be on my hook this evening. I’m thankful for your skill as a designer and your generosity!
Kathy Lashley says
Thank you so much Diane! Your words are so kind!
