Pattern Instructions
Supplies:
1. Red Heart Soft or any worsted weight yarn. Specifications for the Red Heart Soft: 5 oz/141 grams 256 yds. Approximately 200-220 yards. Color way – Berry, Charcoal and White. (All 3 skeins were enough to make the hat and scarf).
2. Crochet Hook Size – I/ 5.50
3. Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends.
Gauge:
12 dc stitches and 6 Rows = approximately 4″
Abbreviations:
beg cl – beginning cluster (YO, insert hook in next stitch, yo, draw yarn through 2 st) 3 times in same st, yo, draw yarn through 4 loops on hook
ch – chain
cl – cluster stitch (YO, insert hook in next stitch, yo, draw yarn through 2 st) 4 times in same st, yo, draw yarn through 5 loops on hook
dc – double crochet
hdc – half double crochet
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
Notes: I initially made the hat using 60 st that gave me a 6.5″ flat circle measurement after round 5. Because I used hdc and sc stitches in the design, it “tightened” the hat somewhat and would actually fit a 20-21″ head circumference perfectly. I added another increase round (72 st) that gave me a 7″ flat circle and fit 22″ better. Depending on the yarn, either one could work. Red Heart Soft is just that….soft and tends to make a smaller stitch than even other Red Heart products like the Red Heart Super Saver or Red Heart with Love.

Hey Kathy quick question…I’m making this pattern for my little girl who is five …and I’m using a cotton yarn (love sugar and cream) I’m on round 4 and was wondering which you think would work best for her size….stopping here or going one or two more increases out…thanks so much for the great patterns…everytime I find one I like and click for pattern it always turns out to be yours lol thanks again…Ginger
Kathy Lashley says
Ginger,
You will probably want your flat circle measurement to be between 5-5.75″. The Sugar and Cream yarn is thicker than the Red Heart Soft (or allows for a tighter stitch). Try the measurement and let me know how that works for you.

Just finished mine up! I love this pattern, but mine came out very bucket-shaped. It isn’t smaller around the brim/fitted around face. Should I have decreased in the last few rows? Did I miss something somewhere? I’d love to make it work, because this pattern turns wonky color choices into something really cute!
Kathy Lashley says
I’m not really sure what is happening with your hat. I didn’t use any decrease stitching. You could always try decreasing your stitches on the last few rounds or drop a hook size or two to get a tighter fit. 🙂

Speaking of wonky color choices…my kooky little girl has chosen orange( her favorite color… dances to the beat of her own drum this one)..color b-black…color c-purple ( actually black currant)…but with this design its actually coming together nicely….the girls got style lol

It does sound like it will be pretty!

Love it, Kathy. It turned out great and whipped up very quickly. Thanks so much!
Kathy Lashley says
Wonderful!!!

Please clarify your cluster stitch for me. You say pull thru 4 loops but that leaves 3 unless this ids a different kind of cluster.
Kathy Lashley says
Jill,
Did you print the pattern off earlier yesterday? I had a typo and have since corrected it. On the original I had you just pulling through one stitch, but you will actually pull through 2 stitches each time with 4 left remaining on the hook. I hope this helps. Let me know.
Kathy
Jill says
I see now. Originally it did not have your corrections. I refreshed. Got the corrections.
Kathy Lashley says
Yay!!!
Jill says
Thank you. Had to refresh.
Jill says
Kathy, Am i suppose to skip a stitch after each cluster ? It doesn’t say in your instructions and its looking a little wonky putting a cluster in each stitch
thecrochethooker says
Thanks for the pattern. Round 14 is missing the ch1 between cluster.
Kathy Lashley says
Thanks for your comments. On round 14, you are creating the cluster so there really isn’t a space to ch 1 between the clusters yet since the previous round is using basic stitches. I did note on round 15 to cluster in the ch-1 space though since they were created on round 14. I hope this helps.
