Before my computer crashed earlier this week, I had almost completed the free pattern of my Hounds Tooth hat. I picked up the computer and thankfully the data was saved and placed on an external hard drive. Because of the delay, I has some time and decided to play around with some different yarns. Here are the results:
I used Caron Simply soft in the hat pictured below. It’s what I used when I made the Hounds Tooth scarf, so I figured it would be a good place to start. I made this hat for my husband and had to do an extra increase round in order for it to fit him. To be honest though, I have worked with the Sinfonia cotton yarn since the beginning of the year and it could have been my tension was too tight. As I progressed with different yarns, I was able to follow my pattern without any changes.
I also tried Red Heart Soft for the dark/light brown hat (my favorite one out of the bunch). The hat worked up pretty quickly, but I think my only disappointment is the yarn had the tendency to “snag” a little easier than expected. The result was still good though as this yarn has more of a sheen to it than Caron Simply Soft. I followed my pattern exactly and the hat actually fit Emory. I wanted to see how big the hat would turn out if I did an extra increase round. It fit Emory but it wasn’t as snug as you would want a beanie to fit. Of course, you can see the color and so you know that he wouldn’t let me take his picture! You’ll just have to take my word for it.
The last yarn I decided to use was I Love This Yarn by Hobby Lobby. I really liked the yarn for this particular project. I didn’t have to worry about my tension and could just crochet. I followed the directions without incident. The hat would fit the average person’s head (22 in.). I liked the sheen to the Red Heart the best but as far as the way the hat looks and the overall ease of the material, I probably will make most of the hats using ILTY. Here are some examples from the Hobby Lobby yarn.
Do you need help with the stitch! Here’s a houndstooth tutorial for you!
You can see I’ve had plenty of time to crochet while waiting for my computer. I would love to hear what yarn you chose and your opinion of the yarn.
Here’s the pattern! I hope you enjoy and have fun making the hat!

I totally believe in free enterprise and give permission to sell products made from this hat. Just do me a favor and give me credit for the design!
Oh, and please don’t use my photos as your own! I would love to see your photos of the hat!
Have a blessed day!
Kathy
Your hat photos show a crab stitch in the solids which are in between the color changes…where the tooth stitches are.
the pattern doesnt say that, the pattern is for the tooth stitch only and a crab stitch at the end for border…
am i missing something
Hi Kate,
I actually didn’t Crochet the crab stitch except at the bottom of the pattern. You aren’t missing anything. Happy Crocheting!
Very nice hat! I have struggled with hats and want to try this but I need it to be 24″. I have read the comments about adding more to increase rows but still not understanding what I need to do to make it bigger. 😕 Can you help me understand exactly where and how I go about making it bigger? Thank you
Sure Sandy!
After you finish Round 5, you’ll do another round of increases. Follow this instruction below which will now be your Round 6.
Round 6: Ch 1 and hdc in same sp, hdc in next 3 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc, *hdc in next 4 hdc, work 2 hdc in next hdc*, repeat from *to*, join by sl st to first hdc. (72 sts)
Then just follow the rest of the pattern as written. It will work out for you.
Hope this helps!
Kathy
Thank you for sharing my boys will love your hats , have to make four!!
thank you for sharing the pattern.
Just finished this hat….it’s a little rough d/t where I connected/changed yarns…first time using different colors on anything, ever….but I am so excited I finished it! Great instructions & thank you !!!
Yay! Congrats! The more you do it, the better you get!
Kathy
I am almost done making this for my son, would love to make a matching one for his son. His son is 6. Can you give me an idea on how to make it for achild? Am making it in purple and gray. My son graduated from Kstate. Its a wonderful pattern, thanks so much for sharing.
My husband and I found an amazing B&B near Yosemite here in California and it quickly turned into “our spot” It’s called Hounds Tooth Inn. So making this hat for him was very fitting 🙂
What if I need it to be like a 1/2 an inch bigger? Do I just add a round somewhere between rounds 2-5?
Jamie,
How cool! Yes, do another increase round and that should work! Have a great day!
Will his hat fit 23 inch head?
If you get the same gauge as I did, you could increase to maybe 84 stitches and it would work. If you crochet loose, 80 will probably be fine.
How wonderful! I love these types of stories!
I couldn’t figure out how to post a question without just clicking on Reply to one of your posts. Anyway. I love this pattern and I love the yarn from Hobby Lobby. I am interested in a scarf to go with this hat. Thanks again.
I have a houndtooth scarf. Click on free patterns then scarf patterns. You should see it. I’m mobile right now or would give you the links.
Thank you so much. I can’t wait to try it. I made the hat for a friend and she asked if I had a scarf I could do. I may put more space between the color changes like the hat. Do you think that would work?
I think it would work, sure.
Made a hat for a friend! http://tastecraftiness.blogspot.com/2014/10/a-crafty-friend-requested-redskins.html
Babs,
You could always go up a hook size to make the overall project larger. Im glad you liked the pattern! Have a great day!
Wonderful pattern… Thanks for sharing!
Sorry. I’ve missed something. I can’t figure this out. Where does the reverse stitch come in?
Cathy,
If you begin a round with sc, on the next round you will begin with dc. That’s what will create the pattern. Hope this helps.
Kathy
Hi Kathy, thank you for sharing this pattern. The yarn you liked for this project….was it the weight of a Worstered or a light chunky, or more like the Vanna Yarns? I can’t find the yarn you used. Thanks for any help you can give me~ Ellie
I was completely dismayed that I couldn’t find a good pattern for an Olympic themed cap….UNTIL I found yours! Love how it turned out! I started the five colors when the pattern directed to change colors and then after the five, switched back to white. I also did shorten it for for me at row 19. I’m going back to make another! Thanks for such an easy, great pattern! I’ll look for your contact (email/facebook?) so I can post a picture for you! Again, super pleased with this pattern! Thank-you!
I’ve never made a hat before. I may need to learn that skill next. Thanks for posting these patterns.
You are so welcome!!!
Thank you very much for sharing this free hat….I have just made it for my hubby using left over yarn from 2 of his jumpers. It looks fantastic and he is delighted with it….now to get a pattern for a pair of gloves with the rest that is left over….:-)
Thanks Jennifer. As far as the glove pattern goes…..My friend Maria from Pattern Paradise loved the hat too and designed a pair of gloves to go with them and posted it on her blog as a free pattern. http://pattern-paradise.com/ Check it out.
Kathy
Hey Kathy,
I made this hat for a friend of my son-in-law. It came out great and I am ce it in just a few hours! I’ll definitely be doing this one again.
Cathy
Cathy,
That’s wonderful to hear! So glad it worked out and quick too!
Kathy
hello and thanks for posting this pattern. I am going to attempt to make it, but I just wanted to ask if this will fit size 23 head? I am making it for a man and just wanted to make sure it would fit cause I see you mentioned you added a couple of rows for your husband, so how would I do that, I mean in what rows?
thanks
You can do an extra increase round, so instead of 60 total stitches you will have 72. My husband’s head is 23″ too and doing the extra increase round worked perfectly.
Let me know if you need any other help.
Kathy
okay thank you for replying! I started the hat but noticed that the numbers in my rounds are a little off. for example starting in round 3, instead of 36 stitches I have more and so on. what do you think I am doing wrong? and last, in which round should I do the extra increase? thanks!!!
It sounds like you are adding some stitches that don’t belong. Each increase round should increase by 12 stitches only with this pattern.
You will complete round 5 as normal. You will do this for round 6:
ch 1 and hdc in same sp, hdc in next 3 hdc, work 2 hdc in next hdc, *hdc in next 4 hdc, work 2 hdc in next hdc*, repeat from * to * join by sl st in first hdc (72 st)
Then continue the pattern as normal. I hope this helps.
Kathy
Thanks again for taking the time to reply! I figured I made a mistake on round 3, I actually did 2 hdc in every stitch around. thank you so much for making this pattern available to us for free and for helping me out as well. thanks!
This answered my question above lol thanks!
I love the pattern. Agree with other comments about your yarn selections being very helpful. I really appreciate your generosity for posting the pattern for free. Think you
Thanks for the great pattern, Kathy! I made several for charity. Love the look!

Although I am not totally blind, I am legally blind. I have been crocheting for about 10 years (once I became blind actually). I thank you for sharing your patterns. I made this hat and a water bottle tote (both in less than 4 hours too) based on this pattern. How can I share photo?
Now on to boot cuffs and wrist warmers.
You are so welcome for the patterns and if you want, you can email me the photo at elkstudiocrochet@gmail.com.
I can’t wait to see!!
Kathy
I just hooked this up in less than 90 minutes, including weaving in ends! Ha! I am excited. Will share a photo on FB page.

Love this hat Kathy!! Saw you on Hookin on Hump Day 🙂 Rhondda
Thanks Rhondda! I thought it would be fun to add it on Hookin on Hump Day!
I am adding this hat to my Christmas Present list. I think my oldest brother would be thrilled to have this (even though it doesn’t get that cold in Texas). Thank you!
Nice hat Kathy. I have nearly finished my Hounds tooth bag pattern you shared with us, I have been making it while on holiday.
Oh I hope you will send me a pic!!! elkstudiocrochet@gmail.com. I would love to see it!
Enjoy
Glad you were able to recover everything. The hat came out great! Hubby looks like “Mr. Grumpy Bear”. Taking a picture is NOT that bad! God bless!
Thanks Shantier! Ha ha….that’s his “serious” look. I’ve got a few more with the boys where he lets a little smile/smirk come out! Have a great day!
Really great Kathy… I love it,,, as usual!!!
Thanks Elena!
Thanks Natalie! I’ll be sure to check out your blog too!
Kathy
This is my favorite pattern to make for my 20 year old son, except he is into slouchy hats, so I repeat the hdc rounds in the middle another 3 rows. He loves them, he has four of them now!
Don’t you love it when your family wants you to make them something crocheted? I know I do!!
Thank you Kathy for the free hands-tooth hat pattern. I was looking for a hat for my 11 year old grandson and this is perfect. I did it with Caron Simply Soft color plum perfect and Red Heart Soft in light grey heather. I love it so much I am not sure I want to give it away. lol
Love all your designs.
Have a blessed day.
Karen
You are so welcome. I hope you have a blessed day too!!
Love all of them!!!
