It’s always exciting when I’m asked to write a review of a fun yarn! Yarnspirations is a wonderful company, and I’m really proud to bring this Caron Cake yarn review and a NEW FREE crochet design by me! Be sure to scroll and find all the links for the yarn….there’s one showing lots of different ways the yarn is used in designs by Yarnspirations!

As many of you already know, Yarnspirations released a new yarn called, Caron Cakes. The response to this wonderful and soft yarn was so amazing….you can now expect more Caron Cakes exclusively in Michael’s Store everywhere!
The Caron Cakes have a fun striping effect that will create completely different color groupings depending on the starting shade at the center or outer edge of your ball. It really does help in creating a uniquely beautiful striping that’s as easy as a “piece of cake”.
When I opened my box from Yarnspirations, I found 3 beautiful Caron Cakes in the Buttercream Colorway! I was so excited to get started. I hope you’ll like the pattern and find it elegant and beautiful!
Don’t forget to check out the Look Book from Michael’s too! You’ll love the inspiration in all the projects displayed!
Delightfully Southern Shawl
UPDATE: There is a stitch diagram for this pattern. Click HERE to take a look!
Supplies:
1. Caron Cakes, #4 Worsted Weight, 200 grams/383 yards, 80% acrylic, 20% wool, 2 Cakes/Colorway: Buttercream
2. Hook Size: H/5.0mm
3. Tapestry Needle
Gauge: 13 dc sts and 9 rows = 4″
Finished Measurement: 46” x 14″ (The pattern takes on a crescent shape)
Abbreviations:
bpdc – back post double crochet
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
fpdc – front post double crochet
sc – single crochet
st – stitch
Notes:
- Ch 2 is not considered the first st in the row.
- Ch 1 is not considered the first st in the row.
- Ch 4 is considered the first dc and ch 1 in the row.
- Ch 5 is considered the first dc and ch 2 in the row.
- Add one sc stitch in Row 26, preferably in the middle of the row.
- The first Caron Cake was pulled from the center. When I started the second Caron Cake, it worked out better for me to start from the outer end and work that way than pulling from the center because the yarn “matched” up to that sequence better. You don’t necessarily have to do that because it may work out nicely for you to pull both cakes from the center. I just at least wanted to let you know that’s how mine worked out.

I am so lost on row 2 is there a video to show
Valori Dauma says
I’m starting the new Delightfully Southern Shawl, but I’m doubling it. I’m still a bit of a BBW and prefer a little more to wrap around. I’m doubling since row 2 is an interesting blend of repeats. Is there a way to increase by half again? Then add a bit of height? So instead of 40″ X 14″ it ends up roughly 60″ X 21″-ish?
Kathy Lashley says
Hi Valori,
For Row 1, you would need to increase your stitch count by 18 because the repeat is 9 so you’ll need 2 additional repeats for it to work out correctly. So instead of the repeats in the pattern being 5 and 6, yours would be 6 and 7. Unless you need it larger. Just remember that you really are increasing by 18 stitches to make both sides even. I hope this helps you.

Meryl Miller says
Hi Kathy,
I just found this wonderful pattern. Like Valori, I wish to make it a bit longer and wider. Following your instruction to add 18 stitches is working out wonderfully well. However, how do I add rows without making the shawl even wider?
Kathy Lashley says
Hi Meryl,
There is a part where you’ll get to in the pattern where you are no longer increasing. So get it to the width that you desire then just continue crocheting the rows until you reach your length.
Kathy

Great! Thank you
Jeanne-Marie STory says
Love this shawl! Working on it as I type, however,a little confused on row 2. Am I repeating the entire row 6 Xs? Can’t figure out what is repeated.
Please help
Thanks!
Kathy Lashley says
The first set of brackets will tell you to repeat 5 times. So do that part then there will be a next set of instructions (think of it like the center) and complete that part then you will have another set of instructions that will tell you to repeat 6 times but you won’t finish the 6th set completely as you will stop that part at the ** then dc in the last
4 stitches. It’s like you are doing the first half, the center part then the 2nd part. Once you get the second row done, you’ll be able to better see how it goes.
Jeanne-Marie STory says
Will try it. thank you!!!
Linda says
Wow, thanks for such a gorgeous pattern Kathy. Love it – it’s just a shame we can’t get these lovely yarns in the UK – well, we could but shipping and taxes make it too expensive. Good to know what the yarn is like though 🙂
Kathy Lashley says
Thank you for taking the time comment! I’m sure you will find the perfect yarn!
Pat Geesin says
Another GREAT shawl pattern! I also took a look at the doc referenced in the weekly email for other items made in Caron Cakes. Are the patterns available somewhere? I took a look on Yarnspirations and didn’t find what I was searching for.
Pat Geesin says
Yeah! I found the Caron Cakes patterns on Michael’s website!!! It just took my using the common sense I was born with.. After all, the brochure I was reading was from Michaels. 😉
Susan says
Very beautiful pattern.
Anne Merriam says
Love it Kathy can’t wait to give it a try.
Krestin says
It’s very pretty… I am using Caron cakes now making the pebbles hat and cowl… So far the yarn is awesome…. Of course i found where they attached the yarn to each other… I hate when they do that…but at least it was in the 1st color stripe so I just cut that stripe out ….
Anne Brassell says
Love this!! The pattern and yarn go so well together. Can’t wait to make one of these shawls.

Just what I was looking for, a shawl that wasn’t a triangle. Love it and perfect timing. Lol 🙂 thank you
One question though. I didn’t see how many cakes it takes.
Kathy Lashley says
It’s listed in the first line at the end. You need 2 cakes.
Terri says
Sheesh, sorry for that. My bad. 😜🙄
. Whoot, whoot I just happen to have two cakes in the closet. Can’t wait to get started!!! ✌🏼️❤️🙂
