Supplies

1. Red Heart Soft, 141 grams/256 yards, #4 Worsted weight, 100% acrylic, Charcoal 55 yards, Light Grey Heather/35 yards, Black/35 yards
2. H Hook/5.0 mm
3. Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends.

Finished Sizes: Small (20″), Medium (22″), and Large (24″)

Gauge: 13 hdc sts and 10 rows = 4″

Abbreviations:
bpdc – back post double crochet
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
fpdc – front post double crochet
rem – remaining
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch

Beg 3 dc cluster st (Beg Cluster) – (Yo, insert hook into next st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops) 2 times, yo, pull through all 3 loops.

3 dc cluster st (Cluster) – (Yo, insert hook into next st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops) 3 times, yo, pull through all 4 loops.

Notes:
Ch 1 is not considered the first st unless otherwise stated.

Pattern Instructions:

Round 1: Using Charcoal, ch 4, join by sl st to first st to form ring, Ch 1 (See Notes), 9 hdc in ring, join by sl st to first st. (9 hdc)

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 hdc in each st, join by sl st in first st. (18 hdc)

Round 3: Ch 1, hdc in first st, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, repeat from *, join by sl st in first st. (27 hdc)

Round 4: Ch 1, hdc in first st, hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc next st, repeat from *, join by sl st in first st. (36 hdc)

Round 5: Ch 1, hdc in first st, hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st, repeat from *, join by sl st in first st. (45 hdc)

Round 6: Ch 1, hdc in first st, hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next st, repeat from *, join by sl st in first st. (54 hdc) 20″ Skip to Round 9

Round 7: Ch 1, hdc in first st, hdc in next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next 5 sts, 2 hdc in next st, repeat from *, join by sl st in first st. (63 hdc) 22″ Skip to Round 9.  Please Note:  If this is the hat size you choose, at the end of Round 9 you will need to add a stitch.  You must end on an even number.

Round 8:  Ch 1, hdc in first st, hdc in next 5 sts, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next 6 sts, 2 hdc in next st, repeat from *, join by sl st in first st. (72 hdc) 24″

Round 9: Ch 1, hdc in first st, hdc in next st and each rem st around, join by sl st in first st. (54,64,72 hdc)

Round 10: Light Heather Gray, ch 1, *fpdc around post of first st, bpdc around post of next st, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. (54,64,72 post sts)

Round 11: Join Charcoal, ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next st and each rem st around, join by sl st to first st. (54,64, 72 sc)

Round 12: Join Black, ch 1, sc in first st, ch 1, *skip next st, sc in next st, ch 1, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st, [(27,32,36 sc) (27,32,36 ch-1 sps)]

Round 13: Sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, Beg cluster (See Special Stitches) in same ch-1 sp, *ch 1, skip next st, Cluster (See Special Stitches) in next ch-1 sp, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. [(27,32,36 clusters, (27,32,36 ch-1 sps)]

Round 14: Sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *ch 1, skip next st, sc in next ch-1 sp, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. [(27,32,36 sc) (27,32,36 ch-1 sps)]

Round 15: Join Light Heather Gray, ch 1, sc in first st, *sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next st, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. (54,64,72 sc)

Round 16: Join Black, ch 1, sc in first sc, ch 1, *skip next st, sc in next st, ch 1, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. [(27,32,36 sc) (27,32,36 ch-1 sps)]

Round 17: Sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, Beg cluster in same ch-1 sp, *ch 1, skip next st, cluster in next ch-1 sp, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. [(27,32,36 clusters, (27,32,36 ch-1 sps)]

Round 18: Sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *ch 1, skip next st, sc in next ch-1 sp, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. [(27,32,36 sc) (27,32,36 ch-1 sps)]

Round 19: Join Charcoal, ch 1, sc in first st, *sc in next st and each rem st around, join by sl st to first st. (54,64,72 sc)

Round 20: Join Light Heather Gray, ch 1, *fpdc around post of first st, bpdc around post of next st, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. (54,64,72 post sts)

Round 21: Join Charcoal, ch 1, sc in first sc, ch 1, *skip next st, sc in next st, ch 1, repeat from * around, join by sl st to first st. (54,64,72 sc )
