I’ll admit this is probably one of my favorite hats I’ve made so far. I believe the color choice has A LOT to do with it. I used I Love this Cotton by Hobby Lobby! How did I come up with the name Honeysuckle? I didn’t……hubby names most of my hats. The summer months in Alabama brings a fragrance to the outdoors which is filled with beautiful honeysuckle vines everywhere. As a kid, I would sit there for hours pulling out the pistol of the flower and tasting the sweetness. Great memories.
Honeysuckle is a great summer hat which works up fairly quickly. I also believe this would be a good chemo hat for my ELK Studio – From the Heart charity events. The brim has a special stitch that I’ve also used on Morning Sky and Southern Comfort. The Hobby Lobby yarn does a great job of holding the brim in place. I was able to get 6 rounds without it flopping and may even try 8 rounds next time…..
I’ve made two different sizes for the hat. One that will fit 18-20″ and the other to fit 21-22″. You will see the flat circle measurements on Rounds 7 and 8. If you want the smaller size, you will skip round 8 and continue to round 9.
I hope you enjoy the pattern and will consider donating a hat to your local charity or join me and others in giving this month to the Cancer Center of East Alabama Medical Center (Deadline: June 20th). You can find out more details in my ELK Studio Crocheters Facebook group!

3. Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends.
Gauge: 16 stitches and 8 Rows = approximately 4 inches. (My measurements were taken from the rounds using the hdc st.

ch – chain
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet

Special Stitches (Aligned Single Crochet) – insert hook in st, YO and pull up loop (2 loops on hook), YO, pull through one loop, insert hook in same space, YO and pull up loop (3 loops on hook), YO and pull through all 3 loops. The stitch will allow for a thicker brim which also will help it to be stronger and leave less of a visual join.

NOTE: Some have said their “bumps” for the tr was on the inside of the work. The only explanation that I can come up with for this particular design is that I am left-handed. So…..When you start working Round 10 and this is happening, take out Round 10, turn your work then try it again. You’ll then be working on the WS of the hat for Rounds 10-23. You’ll need to then turn your work again to start Round 24. I hope this helps.

The flower is a great accent to Honeysuckle don’t you think???? I was searching out and found this jewel on Stitch 11. It was so very simple….so easy that I had to blink at the directions because it doesn’t take much at all to make this beauty. Thanks to Stitch 11 for having a great pattern out there for me (and you) to use!

I haven’t crocheted in years but this hat is so cute that I have to make it. You did great with this design & colors. Thank you.
Deborah says
I made this hat this week and it was really fast and easy! Thank you so much for the pattern!
Candice Loper says
Kathy,
My head measures 24″ around including the ears and that is without hair! I see that you increased the size by adding another round of increase at round 9 to make the adult size 22″. If I add one more increase round with 7 hdc between increases, would that work to give me the 24″ that I need?. I love this hat. Hoping it looks good on me. I dont have cancer, but I also dont have much hair on my head. I wear wigs but would love to wear just cotton hats in the summer as wigs are so hot. I’m really love this pattern and the colors too!
Candice Loper says
i meant the increase at round 8 🙂
Kathy Lashley says
Increasing another round would be done. I think you will find this hat works up loosely though and you may not need another round of increases.
Kathy Lashley says
Doing another increase round should work for you.

“ch 1 and hdc in same sp” has me confused. What is the “same sp(ace)”? Thanks! Can’t wait to make this hat for my friend with breast cancer, she starts chemo in a few weeks.
Kathy Lashley says
Linda,
After you slip stitch. Ch 1 and make a hdc in the first stitch. Does that make more sense? Let me know if this helps. I’m sure your friend will love her hat!
Kathy
Linda says
Kathy, yes it does! thank you 🙂
Linda says
Oops, one more question please 🙂
Rounds 10-23, are the tr stitches aligned on top of each other, and sc the same? Or are they alternating on each round? I’m not sure if I started round 11 correctly or not. Thanks!
Kathy Lashley says
No worries!! You are going to alternate. If you start one round with a sc, you will start the next round with a tr.
Linda says
That’s what I thought, thanks!

Angela Harper says
I, and a friend, have made the smaller version of the hat. They both have come out larger than the picture and isn’t quite shaped the same. After you do the pink part on top shouldn’t the sides go in, or decrease in stitches to make it go down the sides? Does that make any sense? Maybe we both just crochet too loose.
Kathy Lashley says
Angela,
You can try to decrease your stitches another round to see if that will help you. Are you using the same yarn? That can make a difference too.
Tension and gauge is always hard to do but hopefully decreasing a round will help you.

Alexandra says
I’ve used the I Love This Cotton once on some washcloths, but I ended up not finishing them up. I love that it is really soft, but it definitely doesn’t feel towel like as Lily’s Sugar n Cream does and it doesn’t feel like Lion Brands Cotton Ease or Bernats Cotton(ish). As so – does it still keep little heads cool? What are your thoughts?
Kathy Lashley says
Alexandra,
I plan on trying the hat out at the beach this summer, so we’ll see about the coolness. I would imagine since it’s made of cotton, it will allow more air to pass through and would be great protection from the sun. I agree with you on all counts of your opinion on the softness of the yarn versus the other cotton brands. I have used all the others for certain projects and love them, but for this hat, I think it’s a perfect match.
Karen says
Thank you for this pattern! I am currently undergoing chemotherapy for cancer and have been looking for a summer hat pattern to make for myself.

Karen,
Blessings to you and I pray for a complete healing.

Which colors did you use? Thank you
Kathy Lashley says
Marisa,
I’m sorry I didn’t have the information on the supplies. (I’ve added it), but the solid is Pink and the variegated is called Too Pink.
Thanks,
Kathy
