UPDATE 4/25/14: The pattern for #4 cotton yarn is now available and is at the bottom of the page. Enjoy!
UPDATE 4/23/14: Two additional sizes are available using the Sinfonia yarn. See the patterns below! Additional pattern is coming soon using a #4 cotton yarn.
It was such an honor when Tracy from Crochet for Cancer asked me to design a hat for chemo patients. I wanted this hat lightweight, cool and most importantly…..elegant. I love making my summer hats and since this one is the first for the year, I decided it would be proper to call it Southern Comfort to follow suit for my other Southern hats with the difference being this hat is free! I’ve also designed the brim with a special stitching so that it is stronger and won’t flop down in your face.
Tracy gave me some guidelines when you start making these hats for chemo patients that are important because we want our recipients to know they’ve received a hat in a safe and healthy environment. You can also find other great information from the site including other free patterns and local chapters (you can even find out how to start your own chapter).
Cancer is awful…..There really isn’t much more that needs said. So many people suffer from this awful disease in different ways. When a patient undergoes chemotherapy she/he could lose their hair and these hats will bring comfort to those in need. It not only will protect their head from the summer sun but hopefully make them feel as beautiful as they are right?
My prayer would be that if you want to make yourself one…go for it, but will you also consider making another one in honor of someone fighting for their life? You can give directly to Crochet for Cancer, or I have ELK Studio – From the Heart and we give monthly to various organizations. In May we will be donating hats to a children’s oncology department. You can find more information about the event in my ELK Studio Crocheters Facebook group. We would LOVE for you to make some children smile this summer with bright and cheery Southern Comfort hats! Please favorite or queue in Ravelry too!!
Southern Comfort Pattern
Supplies:
1. Yarn – Sinfonia that you can purchase at Hobby Lobby or Creative Yarn source. You will need approximately 250-275 yds.
2. Hook – G/4.0
3. Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends
Gauge: 10 stitches and 7 Rows = approximately 2 inches. (Measurements taken from the rounds using the hdc st.
Note: No one has ever told me the hat was too small when they followed my patterns using the Sinfonia, but a few people have said it was too large. Gauge is one of the hardest things to measure because each person has different tension. If you find your hat becoming too large, you can drop a hook size and hopefully that will solve the problem.
Also I realize that not everyone will want to use the Sinfonia yarn which is equivalent to a #3 thread, so I will be making another version of this hat in a thicker cotton yarn like Sugar and Cream, Lion Brand or Red Heart brand. Be on the look out for this version within the next week.
Abbreviations:
asc – aligned single crochet (see special stitch)
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
hdc – half double crochet
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip st
YO – yarn over
Special Stitch – Aligned Single Crochet – insert hook in st, YO and pull up loop (2 loops on hook), YO, pull through one loop, insert hook in same space, YO and pull up loop (3 loops on hook), YO and pull through all 3 loops. The stitch will allow for a thicker brim which also will help it to be stronger.

Prior to starting round 9, please note only 88 stitches are needed for this round. You will need to decrease 2 stitches evenly for the round. I did not reflect that in the directions below. The part of the pattern that states, “work 2 hdc in next hdc” will only be done a total of 8 times. The other 2 remaining will only have one stitch in the space.

Thank you for this great pattern. I crochet hats for a fundraiser our family holds every september for Breast Cancer research. I know that these will be popular.
Karen says
This is so cute. My husband has just started chemo & radiation for esophageal adenocarcinoma and there is a lovely young lady at 28 that takes chemo for breast cancer that has spread and from what her husband said it isn’t her first round there. I have secondary progressive MS and it is very hard for me to get around and even more so with all the stress from my husband she always makes sure I have a chair next to my husbands recliner and I wanted to do a little something for her. This is the hat I have been searching for. Your work is very lovely you are very very talented and I believe I will make some for the cancer patients there.
Kathy Lashley says
Karen,
I’m sure that young lady will be blessed with your gift. Prayers to all of you and healing for your husband and that young lady.

I am having a difficult tome finding the special stitch instructions, can you direct me to where they are located on the page please? And thank you so much for the pattern. Your work is beautiful.
Kathy Lashley says
Tammy,
I’m so sorry. Evidently when I updated the pattern this morning, I accidentally deleted the special stitch instructions. I’ve put them back in and they are located right under the Abbreviations Listing and right before the Adult Size hat instructions. Let me know if you need any other help.
Kathy
Tammy says
Thank you so much, I see it now and am relieved To find I have not totally lost it after all. Again you have been blessed with amazing talent and am glad you are sharing it.
Renee Bednarczyk says
I made your hat, but I had to use the F hook, and I skipped about 8 rows on the hat, because it was huge!!! But it still came out really nice, thank you for the pattern.
Kathy Lashley says
Renee,
Glad to hear it turned out okay. Did you use Sinfonia?
Kathy
Renee Bednarczyk says
i used peaches and cream cotton yarn, 2 in ecru, 2 in sail away, where can I post a picture of it for you?
Kathy Lashley says
That’s why your hat turned out big. That’s a #4 yarn and the Sinfonia is a #3 yarn. I’m coming out with directions for #4 yarn soon.
You can send it to my Facebook page. Click on the icon on the homepage.
I can’t wait to see!
Kathy
Renee Bednarczyk says
I sent a friend request on facebook. I have never heard of the Sinfonia yarn, so that is why I tried it with peaches and cream 🙂 I can’t wait for the pattern using the cotton yarn!!!
Kathy Lashley says
Sinfonia is cotton yarn too, just thinner. If you click on the icon on my homepage, it will take you to my business page. That’s where you can post the pic for me to share with everyone else!!

Working on the special stitch and having trouble. After insert hook, YO, pull back through and two loops on hook, should I YO again before I pull through one loop and insert into same stitch? I have tried and tried, but if I do not do second YO only have 2 loops at the end.
Kathy Lashley says
Yes, you will YO before you pull through one loop and insert into the same stitch. Pattern updated to reflect the YO in the pattern. Thanks!
madukeshookup says
Round 15 also refers to dc on previous round, but round 14 is all hdc.
Kathy Lashley says
Thanks!!! Fixed!
madukeshookup says
Sorry if I am being a pest, but really, really stuck. By the way, love this pattern and looking to try in only one color. Then again, in variegated, and, and, and……

Thanks Carolynn. I pray your friends are blessed by your talent and heart. May they also get a total healing. Please enjoy the pattern.

Kara says
Is there an easy way to make this in smaller sizes for kids? I’m sure some little girls in a children’s hospital would love one of these!
Kathy Lashley says
Kara,
I’m working on the other sizes right now but in the mean time:
Round 8 gives you 5.25″ and you would skip 9 and 10 and go straight to 11 and follow the rest of the pattern accordingly. You may not need to do round 31 or 32 though as the brim may get too heavy.
Round 9 gives you 6″ and you would skip round 10. The tricky part on this round is you need to have a total number of stitches divisible by 4, so you would need to decrease 2 stitches evenly on round 9 to give you a total of 88 stitches. On the brim, instead of increasing every 10 stitches, you would need to increase either every 8 stitches or 11 stitches.
I hope this helps until I can officially get the other patterns written out.
Kathy
Kara says
Thank you!!! Would this then fit a child age 3 to 10-ish?

Round 8 should fit the 3 year old but may be a little big. You could drop a hook size though. You want to get around 4-5.5″ for the circle on your 3 year old. Round 9 should fit 4-8 yr. old. That’s what I’m working on now….. 🙂

I think there is typo on round 12 (Round 12 ch 1 and hdc in same sp, hdc in next dc and around, join by sl st in first hdc. (100 st). It referenced a dc, should be hdc right?

Thank you! You are right and it’s been corrected. Those dang typos can really throw things off at times can’t they???
