When I started selling my crochet items early December, one of my relatives asked me if I would make her some boot cuffs! Well, they have definitely been my best-selling item thus far! I was really excited when a local salon and boutique, 2 Chic asked to buy 10 pair from me! I live in Auburn, Alabama which if you don’t know, is a college town and the latest trendy items are very important to these college girls. Needless to say, I worked HOURS getting them done but loving every minute of it too.
After making a few for my customers, I finally got a chance to write the pattern for the ripple stitch pattern and wanted to share it with everyone else! I hope you enjoy! Please let me know if you catch any errors or have questions. Constructive criticism is always welcomed. It is the only way to get better!

Kathy Lashley says
Thank you Lory!
Carol Crawford says
Thank you for your patterns, they are beautiful. I do a little crocheting, mainly afghans, I don’t know how to tie off the end to make it round, Please help me. Thank you so much.. Carol
Kathy Lashley says
Carol,
The cuff is made in two parts. The first part will have you working in rows. Once you get to the point where the cuff is the right size to fit around the calf, you will sew that part together to form the “cuff”. Then you will join by sl st to the upper portion of the cuff (I usually do this where I whipped stitched the cuff together) and single crochet evenly around to begin the second portion of the instructions on the cuff. I hope this helps you.

Thank you so much for sharing. I am going to make these as knee warmers. I don’t knit and have been looking for knee warmers that would stay up. I think this pattern is the one. Thank you much.
Jane says
Hi, Kathy. I just wanted to tell you that I love this pattern. I’ve even made them for my 8 year old grand daughter. I’ve found though, that it works better for me to chain 12 in the beginning, this gives me 4 clusters across. They turn out really pretty this way. I’ve given probably a half dozen pairs as gifts made this way. Thanks so much for sharing such a great pattern
Shannen says
I am trying to work on this pattern and on the top portion of the boot cuff, row 3, it says you end up with 10 stitches. I only end up with 9. What am I doing wrong?
Kathy Lashley says
Shannen,
You should start by making 11 ch stitches then if you sc in 2nd ch from hook, you will have 10 st. Are you remembering to do the sc in the last st?
Rachel says
Ty for the great pattern, it easy to follow. The ripple stich was new to me, I picked it up quite quickly.
I made a pair in a day, b/w tag, 4 year old arguments over clothing choices, crafts, making dinner and all the other mommy duties.
My first boot cuff down, I all ready have a pair of winter socks ( my first socks) tuck away. Now what and who to make presents for next….
I’m going to try your boot cuff with star stitch soon.
I have a pair of star stitch kid booty slippers on the brain. So many patterns so little time.
Annie says
I was going to try these and I was wondering how many rows you did in the first part?
Thanks for your opinion:-)
Kathy Lashley says
It’s been quite a while but I think I had 15-16 rows. I did enough rows to where it fit my calf size.
Hope this helps.
Kathy
Kathy Lashley says
Laurie,
Thanks for your comments. It’s been a long time since I’ve written the pattern. I’ll have a look at it again and check it out.

Beautiful pattern and thank you for sharing…What is the multiple for your ripple stitch?
Kathy Lashley says
Thank you so much!! It’s multiples of 3 plus one
Monique says
You’re welcome and thank you. 🙂
Connie says
I’m crocheting these boot cuffs for a friend. Her calf measures 14 1/4″. I’ve crocheted 19 rows of “ripples” and it measures 13 1/2″. They look so big, I don’t know if I should quit at 19 rows, or if I should crochet another row. Are they supposed to stretch out alittle? Thanks for your reply.
Kathy Lashley says
Connie,
I think you probably are at a good stopping point for the top portion of the cuff. I know exactly what you mean about them looking “big” but they probably will fit her perfectly. I don’t know what yarn you used, but some yarn has more “spring” to it than others but most yarn does have a tendency to stretch a little.
Let me know if you need anything else.
Kathy
Connie says
Hi Kathy! I’m using LionBrand Heartland which is a medium 4. My gauge is what it’s supposed to be, but they look a lot larger than the picture. I just wanted to make sure I was crocheting these right before continuing. Thanks so much for the quick response. I really like your patterns, you are very talented! Have a great day!
Connie says
One more question….how many stitches would you pick up on 13 1/2″ to start the bottom rows?
Kathy Lashley says
Connie,
That’s a good question. Why don’t you try the recommended sc count. I probably wouldn’t go more than 50 though because it may cause the material to buckle at that point. Hope this helps.
Kathy
Connie says
Hi Kathy! Just wanted to let you know that I got my boot cuffs done. Worked out well. 42 stitches for the bottom part was perfect. Thanks again!
Harriet rose says
Was looking for a boot cuff pattern, thanks for sharing as am new to crochet, going to try and do your pattern can I use any yarn as am from the uk, and the yarn that you used I can’t get unless I know someone from the USA want to send me the yarn.

Thanks so much for sharing this pattern! I just finished making a pair for a friend of mine using Lion Brand homespun yarn and they turned out so cute. I put a picture up on my blog if you want to check them out 🙂 Thanks again!

Janetw says
Is the bottom of the cuff single crocheted or double crocheted? Looking at the photo it looks double crocheted.
ELK Studio - Handcrafted Crochet Designs says
The bottom is alternating single and double crochet with one round of hdc in the mix too.
Kathy
Audrey says
How many skeins of yarn would I buy for this project?
ELK Studio - Handcrafted Crochet Designs says
I used less than one skein of yarn to make both cuffs.
ELK Studio - Handcrafted Crochet Designs says
Stephanie,
Yay! I would love to see them in that yarn. You should send me a pic when you’ve finished! elkstudiocrochet@gmail.com

I Love this pattern and so do my friends ive made more boot cuffs then imaginable ive even made childrens. the puffy top really gives them texture and warmth ive tried other pattern and they are just flat yours really tops the boot. lol!
Lisa says
Any chance you can add total number of stitches on each row for the bottom half of the boot cuff?
Libby Courlang says
Thank you for this pattern. I’m not sure what the length of the top would be. Please help me.
Libby
ELK Studio - Handcrafted Crochet Designs says
Libby,
Do you know the size of the calf? I usually crochet the top portion until both ends meet. If someone’s calf measured 15″ then I would crochet enough rows to make 15-16″.
I hope this helps.

Pictures of the cuff on the leg with the boot would be super helpful for visualization. THANKS!
Deanna says
Looks super cute, going to make a few for quick Christmas gifts! Just wondering, for the decreasing on the bottom part, does the skipping sc leave holes? Would it be better to sc2tog (I think that’s the right term?)) rather than skipping? Thanks!
ELK Studio - Handcrafted Crochet Designs says
Deanna,
You certainly can sc2tog! It didn’t leave holes but either way will achieve your goal. Would love to see a pair when you’ve finished!

Sarah says
Hi – I am trying this for the first time – hoping I get it right – I’m no pattern expert, but I know my basic stitches. One thing I thought you might want to edit, is that when you get to the row 4 at the beginning, (I did a chain-2 and turned, btw – instead of chain-1, not sure why, I guess because it’s double stitch – maybe that’s a mistake), I think it should say to then skip the first two, rather than repeating row 3 “exactly” by beginning in the first stitch – because when you continue on and try to begin with the first stitch in the row – it adds another shell section each row which makes it wider and wider rather than uniform in width, if that makes sense.
ELK Studio - Handcrafted Crochet Designs says
Sarah,
Thank you for taking the time to comment. One thing you may be missing is the last stitch of the row. You don’t end with a dc, you will be ending with a sc. Do 3 sets of the sc,dc,dc (which makes 9 stitches), ending with a sc will make the 10th stitch for the row, then ch 1, turn and begin again.
Let me know if you have any other questions or comments. I always love to get feedback!

Kathy, thanks soo much for this awesome pattern and for letting the finished products be sold. I have a page on Facebook that i sell crocheted items on and I had a request for boot cuffs and these are by far the cutest!! Thank you so much and God bless:)

Congrats on getting orders for the cuffs! I hope you sell lots of them. God bless you too!

Wendy says
I plan on making these for a gift exchange. I will have no idea of the persons calf size. How many rows would you suggest for the top portion when not knowing the calf size?
ELK Studio - Handcrafted Crochet Designs says
Wendy,
I think that would be hard to determine. I always knew the calf size before I started my project. When I did a medium size, I think I would crochet around 15-16 rows.
I hope this helps.
Kathy
Kristi says
I abhor seaming and weaving in ends. After finishing the top portion, I brought the ends together and “stitched” with sc, then started the bottom. Only two ends to weave and no seaming, priceless! Thanks for sharing your pattern!!
ELK Studio - Handcrafted Crochet Designs says
You are so welcome Kristi. Yea, weaving in the ends isn’t my favorite part either. I could just crochet all day if someone would sew in those ends for me!! Glad you liked the pattern!

Lynette Winston says
Thank you so much for posting this boot cuff pattern. It is a very pretty boot cuff. And very easy to follow and make. Thank you once again for posting this and for free. It is probably one of the prettiest ones I have seen and made.
ELK Studio - Handcrafted Crochet Designs says
Thanks Lynette!
Cindy Racobs says
On the bottom portion rows 2,4 & 6 say “dc into next dc and around” but the previous rows are all sc. Is this correct?
Tina Muldoon says
I cannot figure this out. Do you make 2 sides and sew together? Also, how many of the top portion do I make.I am really confused. Hopefully you will see this since the last post was in January. My daughter requested I crochet these for her.
Thanks in advance!
Tina Muldoon says
Ok I think I get it now. I will try this again!
ELK Studio - Handcrafted Crochet Designs says
Ok. Great. You make the top portion first and make enough rows to fit comfortably around your daughter’s calf. You will the crochet the bottom portion. Let me know if you need anything else.
Kathy
Tina Muldoon says
Thanks Kathy for responding so quickly. I was not reading it properly. I made the first one. Like the first pancake, I am sure I will get better as I continue to make them. Thanks again!
Kim Mann says
This is a great pattern. Can you tell me the measurement of the one you have pictured? Like how wide the cluster or top portion before sewing?
ELK Studio - Handcrafted Crochet Designs says
Kim,
I believe I had 15 or 16 rows on this particular cuff. I would take the measurement of my customer’s calf and crochet enough rows to fit comfortably. I hope thus helps.
Kathy
Allison Brantley says
I was wondering what size calf does this fit.?
ELK Studio - Handcrafted Crochet Designs says
Allison,
That’s the beauty of the pattern. Since it is made in 2 pieces, you will make the top part to fit the size you need. You will just keeping increasing the number if rows until you have the desired fit.
Kathy

I made a pair yesterday, and they are FANTASTIC! Thanks for sharing the pattern!!!

gail vee says
Hi Kathy:)
My calves measure 14 inches around with yoga pants or leggings. How many stitches should one chain for a larger calf? DIN has larger calves and im not certain how stitches I need to chain to make them fit? Can’t wait to try this pattern:) Thanks for sharing!
ELK Studio - Handcrafted Crochet Designs says
Gail,
I made a pair recently for someone about the same calf size as you, and I think I did around 16 rows. You are making the top portion first (which calls for completed rows not chains), so I would find out the measurement of your DIN’s calf (unless it’s a surprise) and crochet enough rows to fit. I didn’t use exact measurements because unlike head measurements, there is so much variability with the calf size. I hope this helps and let me know if you need any other help. You can always email me at elkstudiocrochet@gmail.com.

carlyturner74 says
How many rows of the top should I do? I made a pair for myself and measured my own leg for them but my calves are a little smaller than average I think. I had someone order several pairs from me. How big around do I make them? Thank you!
ELK Studio - Handcrafted Crochet Designs says
Carly,
Have your customer give you the size of her calf. That’s what I do when someone orders a pair from me. I hope this helps. Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you!
Kathy
Carly Turner says
What is the measurement you suggest for these? I made some for myself and had someone order a few pairs and I’m not sure how big around to make them. Thank you!
ELK Studio - Handcrafted Crochet Designs says
Have your customer give you the measurement of her calf. I think that would be the best way to be accurate.
Charlie says
Hi. Im trying to figure this pattern out and it doesnt seem to make sense to me. Im new to crocheting and after I begin with 10 stitches its not coming out right. It keeps decreasing. Is something missing? At the end of the top portion Im confused how it fastens together?
Sorry if Im just not seeing it. There so nice my daughter will love them. Help
ELK Studio - Handcrafted Crochet Designs says
Are you ending your rows with a sc stitch? Check that because I’ve had someone else say the same thing and that ended up being the issue.

I think there should be a Row 4 beginning with skip 2 stitches, sc and 2dc in next st, etc. Then the rest of the pattern repeats Row 4.
kathylashley says
Are you ending your row with a sc? If so, I’m not sure that would work. I just tried your suggestion and couldn’t get it my stitches to turn out right. Let me know how you ended your row.
Ashley says
I totally get it now! I glossed right over ending with the sc- even after staring at the pattern to figure out what I was doing wrong. Now to start this beautiful pattern over the RIGHT way! Thank you!
kathylashley says
I’m so glad! I’ll go back and “bold” that line so that no one else will have the same issue. Please send me a picture of your finished cuffs. I love would to show them off on my Facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/elkstudio.lashley
